IGNORED WARNING
EX-BOOKMAKER FOUND ON COURSE RETURNED ON SECOND DAY From Out * Oxen Correspondent WHANGAREI, Today. In the Whangarei Magistrate’s Court this morning, before Mr. G. N. Morris. S.M., George Warren Shilton was charged with having been found on the Dargaville racecourse on February 22 and 24, while having been convicted of bookmaking in 1926 and fined £2O. Detective Robertson said that he warned Shilton on the first day when he left, but he found him on the course again on the second day of the meeting. Mr. Morris: That makes it look an impudent offence. Mr. L. A. Johnston, counsel for the accused, said that Shilton was a crippled returned soldier, living on a pension which was a small amount, and he had a wife and three children to support. Mr. Morris: I will take the risk and order him to come up for sentence when called upon.
