PLUNKET CONFERENCE
DR. BUCKLEY TURKINGTON ADDRESSES DELEGATES An address upon The Obstetrics j Endowment Appeal was given by Dr. j Buckley Turkington yesterday after- j noon to the delegates attending the I conference of the Auckland branch the Royal New Zealand Society for the Health of Women and Children. IH*. Buckley Turkington is the convenor for the appeal for the districts outside the City of Auckland. The way in which it was planned to raise .£7,500, the Auckland quota, was outlined by the speaker, who said, when speaking of the heavy maternal mortality that existed in so many countries, that women themselves were partly to blame for they had taken things far too meekly. This appeal, however, was their chance, and she hoped that New Zealand would rise r .o the occasion and show to the whole world what could be done in fighting this devastating loss in motherhood. Mrs. AY. H Parkes, in concluding the business of the meeting, said that the work the Plunket Society had done for the past 21 years had pioneered the way for this particular effort. It had taught mothers how to take care of themselves. With the successful issue of this appeal and the facilities for further training and experience in obstetrical work, which the founding of this chair would give, the work for mothers would be completed. Later in the afternoon the delegates were motored to the Karit'ane Hospital at Mount Albert, where they were the guests of Miss Partridge at afternoon tea. An inspection was also made of the hospital, and a demonstration of its w ork given.
