SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION FOR HOSPITAL AUXILIARY Mrs. Alfred Kidd's home in Gillies Avenue, was the scene of a vsry successful “Garden Fair” yesterday afternoon. The function had bee'n organised by the Ways and Means Committee in aid of the Hospital Auxiliary. The Mayoress, Airs. A. D. Campbell, was unable to be present, so there was. no official opening of the fair. MOTHERS’ THOUGHT GUILD

The monthly drawing room meeting of the Mothers’ Thought Guild, was held at the residence of Airs. Hemus, Epsom, at which there was a large attendance. Mrs. Hemus spoke of the aims and ideals of the Guild for a few minutes, and then gave a very interesting talk on “Patience.”

NEW LYNN CROQUET CLUB The annual At Horne of the New Lynn Croquet Club was held on the club’s lawns on Thursday. The pavilion was arranged with asters and cactus dahlias. The day being fine there was a large attendance of members and visitors. Among the clubs represented were: Helensville, Henderson. Glen Eden, Avondale, Hallyburton Johnstone, Grey Lynn and Alount Albert. Progressive croquet was played and Airs. W r itliam, the president, presented the prizes. OBSTETRICS APPEAL

REMUERA BRANCH FORMED For the purpose of forming a Remuera branch of the Obsteterics Appeal, a meeting was held this week at the residence of Airs. A. M. Ferguson, Victoria Avenue. Airs. Ferguson was elected chairman and Aliss Edna Rhodes secretary. A meeting will be held on Monday afternoon to interest the people of Remuera in the appeal.

MOTHERS RE-UNITE

PICNIC AT ONE TREE HILL CENTRE DELEGATES WELCOMED In beautiful One Tree Hill Park yesterday, . the opening of the official year of the League of Mothers’ Society was celebrated in delightful fashion with a picnic attended by members from all parts of Auckland. The weather was perfect, and in every way the function was a complete success. A message of goodwill from the Dominion president, Mrs. .T. S. Elliot, was given by Mrs. J. T. F. Mitchell, provincial president, who welcomed the members, and informed them that Lady Alice Fergusson had also sent her good wishes for success in the coming year. Airs. Balfour Dawson was honoured with a badge and membership card, in recognition of her voluntary services as a typist for the organisation, and her good work generally. and Airs. Chewings, the Southland provincial president, was welcomed. An excellent speech was delivered by Dr. J. J. North, principal of the Baptist College, who spoke on the privileges and obligations of motherhood, and Aliss A. AI. Arey, provincial secretary, in the course of a short address, urged members to strive for cooperation in the organisation.

THREE BRIDES-ELECT ENTERTAINED AT EDEN • AND EPSOM TENNIS CLUB A HAPPY AFTERNOON A very jolly afternoon was spent at the Eden and Epsom Tennis Club yesterday, when a “tennis tea’’ in honour of three brideselect —Misses Alice Fletcher, Grace Bygate, and Thelma Sands —was organised by the women’s committee. The pavilion had been very prettily arranged with lovely asters and late summer flowers, and each of the guests of honour was presented with a gift. Alembers of the committee responsible for the happy afternoon were Airs. Rickerbv, Airs. Johns, Aliss Knott, Aliss Lowrie, and Aliss Robson. Among those present were: Airs. ENJOYABLE AFTERNOON AT LEAGUE ROOMS TWO PRESENTATIONS Mrs. Dunningham, convenor of the House Committee, and Mrs. John Barr, librarian, who are both retiring from office, were entertained by members of the League of Penwomen yesterday afternoon at the league rooms in Anzac Avenue. Mrs. M, Stuart Boyd, president, thanked Mrs. Cunningham and Mrs. Barr for their great assistance in numerous branches of the league work, and on behalf of the members presented each with an engraved fountain pen. Several items were given during the afternoon by Miss Renee Satchwell, Miss Edna Craig, Mrs. Mello Porter and Miss Joyce Porter.
