STRAND
“THE RETURN OF SHERLOCK HOLMES" Sherlock Holmes often fooled Dr. "Watson with his clever disguises, and he is still at his old tricks in ‘The Return of Sherlock Holmes,” the alltalking Paramount feature at the Strand Theatre. Clive Brook, as Sherlock Holmes, that famous fiction detective of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, uses his make-up knowledge to good advantage. On the trail of Moriarty, the dangerous archcriminal, he secures a position as a musician aboard a transatlantic liner, then changes his entire personality to become a “boots” or steward. “The Return of Sherlock Holmes” brings Sherlock Holmes to the United States for the first time. Heretofore he has always contented himself with tracking down dangerous continental criminals. But when his friend, Captain Longmore was murdered. Holmes left retirement and succeeded in breaking up a giant international radiotapping ring with which Longmore had become entangled. The supports included a Fox Movietone News and two bright vocal features, “The Gay Cabalerro,” with Frank Crummit and Dale Smith in a bracket of old-time English numbers. There is also an interesting scenic, “Rome,” and a rollicking comedy, “The Fatal Forceps.”
