CLINGING TO SPARS
JAPANESE SHIPWRECK SURVIVORS TWO SAVED; 31 DROWNED TOKYO, Thursday. The captain and the quartermaster are the sole survivors of the wreck of the Fakuju Maru. The steamer foundered near Hakodate, on the north coast, in a blizzard on Tuesday. Thirty-one of the crew were drowned. The Hakushin Maru picked up three men clinging to spars. They had been five hours in the freezing water. The third man did not recover consciousness. The captain said he was pursuing a familiar course In very heavy weather when a sudden crash stove in the ship’s bottom. The hands reached the deck and were ordered to the boats, but waves swept over the ship and she sank immediately.
