AUCKLAND GOLF CLUB

PAST YEAR REVIEWED The report of the Auckland tlolf Club to be presented at the annual meeting of the club on March 29 includes the following list of prizewinners for the year: Club championship, E. U. Bartleet; runner-up, W. X. Abbott; junior championship, A. L. Stedman; runner-up, B. Elliot; J. C. Burns Memorial Cup, lb I’lumley; captain’s prize tourney, A. Boddingrton; runner-up, W. S. Ralph; E. R. Bloomfield bowl, R. P. Worley; George Cup medal, J. P. Aidred; George Cup bogey, H. Plumley; four-ball match play tourney, W. B. Colbeck and A. E. M. Rhind. The membership at the close of the year was 400, including 211 playing members and 50 boy members. The new third, eighth, twelfth, fourteenth and fifteenth greens were opened toward the end of the season, and as forecasted in previous reports the remainder of the scheme adopted in 1927 was completed during the summer months by the reconstruction of the first, second, seventeenth and eighteenth greens. Minor improvements adding very greatly to the golfing value had been made to the fifth, sixth and eleventh holes. As in the past all work had been supervised by Mr. C. IT. Redhead and the general design and lay-out were a striking testimony to his skill. It was confidently anticipated that when the new holes were brought into play at the end of the coming season the course would not suffer by comparison with any other inland course in the Dominion. Five temporary holes had been laid out on I-larding’s property and an area in the middle was kept cut for practice purposes. The greenkeeper, engaged in England, took up his duties during the year, and the committee felt that his expert knowledge would be of great value to the club. The full benefit of the alterations to the clubhouse were felt during the past year and members generally had approved of the increased comfort provided. During the season inter-club matches were played against the Maungakiekie, Glendowie, Hamilton, Pupuke and Otaliuhu Golf Clubs. The champion of champions match inaugurated during the year was held at Middlemore. The club champions from the Akarana, Auckland, Everslie, Glendowie, Maungakiekie, Otahuli.u, Pupuke, Pukekohe and Waiuku Clubs competed. During tiie school holidays a boys’ tournament was held, and although the weather seriously interfered with the play, the enthusiasm of the contestants was most encouraging. It was hoped to make this event an annual, one. Consequent upon the additional expenditure on the course and clubhouse, and following upon the increased subscriptions of its own members, the committee hud been reluctantly compelled to increase the per capita contribution from members of the Auckland Ladies’ Golf Club. Middlemore being under reconstruction, the Hamilton Golf Club had kindly offered to hold the ensuing Easter tournament on its Jinks.

The report showed that the membership stood at 84, and reference was made to the success achieved by the eiub champion, Dr. c. !•:. li.uwden” who was runner-up in the first champion of champions match held in Auckland. The report also ref erred to the success of Mr. W. JS. Celbeck in the Franklin County championship and to Miss Una Muir in again winning the Franklin women’s championship. During the year considerable improvement had been effected to greens and fairways, and the club had also purchased a horse-drawn mower f ° r . use on the fairways. Further ad- ■ c V t , i< ? ns had also been made to the clubhouse, and this expenditure, together with the purchase of the mower had resulted in the balance-sheet showing a small debit.
