ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS

WELLINGTON CENTRE’S HOPES From Our Resident Reporter WELLINGTON, Today. Wellington considers that it has Zk lien upon the New Zealand athletic championship shield, to be the subject of contest at Wanganui next week. In the 19 events to bo decided, local opinion is that 'Wellington will gain eight wins, giving the Capital City a mortgage on 40 points of the possible, 133. Calculations here place Wanganui as likely to be runner-up in first places, if Rose comes out in the distance events. Events which are considered certainties for Wellington are the 440 (with J. Fleming, considered to be New Zealand’s only real l.alf-miler), shot and discus (with P. Munro), high jump (with F. Bradey), mile and three-mile walks (with Alec Hill), 440 hurdle (with Ramson) and relay race, in which an easy victory is anticipated. Ramson also is given a good chance in tho 120 hurdles, for which, however. Newall is favourite. Wanganui’s chances are favoured in the mile and three miles, where, in view of Rose’s sensational come-back, Snvidiin is considered to be shaded if ihe Wanganui-Taranaki man decides to compete at the national meeting. The 120yds hurdles (with Newall) and die javelin throw (with S. A. Lay) are a »so expected to go to Wanganui, which has a chance in the long jump. D. Evans is a possibility in the half-mile. Auckland, it is considered, will be in the field with the 220 (won by Elliott), and the mile and three miles if Savidan is not opposed by Rose, but nothing else, while Canterbury is expected to win the :100yds (with Leadbeater), and the long jump (with Ensaw) unless D. Barker, of Wellington, rises to the occasion.

Real opposition is expected to come from Otago, which is likely to win the hammer throw i.with-J. Leckie), the polo vault (with Johnson and Provo), and the hop. step and jump (with Johnson), and also to till places in the 440 and SBO flat races. If there art. any upsets, Otago’s rivalry is most feared lor the shield.
