PERSONAL. —Mr. J. Howarth, whoretired from the Union Company’s service about four years ago, is reported to have died in Sydney last "month. The late Mr. Howarth was for many years in the Union Company’s service and at the date of liis retirement was chief engineer of the Makura. 1-Ie has lived in Sydney since retiring. Captain R. Pearson has relieved Captain W. Wahlstrom of the command of the Orepuki. Mr. R. Phillips, chief engineer of the John, is ashore on sick leave, and his place has been taken by Mr. C. Scott. Mr. T. C. Sawyers has relieved Mr. C. White as second officer of the John. NGATORO FOR SURVEY. —The Union Company’s Ngatoro is to go on the patent slip at Wellington for survey and overhaul. FERN DALE DEPARTS.—The Norwegian motor-ship Ferndale sailed last evening for Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Geelong and Port Pirie to complete unloading cargo from Galveston, New Orleans, San Francisco and Auckland. ULIMAROA FOR SYDNEY.—The Hud-dart-Parker steamer Ulimaroa was scheduled to leave Wellington at noon today with passengers, mail and cargo for Sydney. She is due at Sydney on Tuesday, and will leave next Friday for Auckland. M A RAM A FROM SYDNEY. The Union Company’s intercolonial passenger steamer Marama is scheduled to leave Sydney this afternoon for Auckland with passengers, mails and cargo. The vessel is due here on Tuesday morning. KAIMIRO FROM AUSTRALIA. —ln continuation of her voyage from Adelaide, Edithburg, Wallaroo and Hobart, the Union Company’s cargo steamer Kaimiro cleared Dunedin at 9.30 o’clock this morning for Lyttelton, Wellington, Picton, Auckland and Portland. WEIRBANK LEAVES 5 P.M.—After discharging raw sugar from Peru at Chelsea Wharf the motor-ship Weirbank Avas to move to Western Wharf at 10.30 a.m. today to take in oil fuel. She is to sail at 5 p.m. this day for Makatea Island to load phosphates for Auckland and Lyttelton. PORT BRISBANE’S MOVEMENTS.— The Commonwealth and Dominion Line steamer Port Brisbane is expected to leave New Plymouth on Monday for Napier, Wellington and Lyttelton to continue loading for London and Hamburg. The vessel i-s to sail finally from Lyttelton on March 22 for London, via Montevideo. AORANGI LEFT SYDNEY. The Union Company's Royal Mail motor-liner Aorangi cleared Sydney yesterday afternoon for Vancouver, via Auckland. Suva, Honolulu and Victoria. The vessel is due at this port on Monday morning and is announced to resume her voyage at 3 1 a.m. on Tuesday. She will berth at Prince’s Wliarf. CHILOIL REPORTS—The Union Company has received a wireless message from its chartered tanker Chiloil, en route from San Pedro, reporting that she expected to arrive at Wellington at 3 p.m. tomorrpw. She will later berth at Miramar to discharge her cargo of fuel-oil into the company’s tanks. PORT WAIKATO DIVERTED.—The neAA r coastal motor-vessel, Port Waikato, at present loading hardwood in Australia for New Zealand, is now announced to go to Lyttelton from her loading ports. GOLDEN WEST DISPATCHED. —The j American steamer Golden West was dispatched last evening for Wellington and j Lyttelton to complete the discharge of her cargo from Pacific Coast ports. THE AORANGI COMING.—The Royal Mail liner Aorangi left Sydney at 6.15 o'clock last evening for Auckland, where she is due on Monday morning Avith passengers, mail and cargo. She is to sail at 11 o’clock on Tuesday morning for Vancouver. PASSENGERS ON MONGOLIA. —Russell and Somers, Limited, advises that the following passengers for NeAV Zealand travelled by the P. and O. liner Mongolia, Avhich was due at Sydney yesterday from London:—Auckland: Miss Vaile, Mr. Dexter. Wellington: Misses Fitzpatrick (.2). MAUI POMARE DUE SUNDAY.—The Government motor-ship Maui Pomaic, which arrived at Wellington yesterday morning from Lyttelton, sailed at 7.45 o'clock last evening for Auckland, where she. is due at daylight on Sunday morning. She is to be dispatched for Norfolk Island at 3 o’clock on Monday afternoon. THE PORT CAROLINE. —The Commonwealth and Dominion line steamer Port Caroline is due at Auckland on March 20 from Australia to commence loading for London. She will load also at Gisborne. Waikokopu, Napier and Wellington. Tlic vessel is scheduled to sail for London from Wellington on April ROTORUA LOADING. Advice from the Ncav Zealand Shipping Company states that its liner Rotorua, at present at Queen’s Wharf loading for London, » s to sail on Monday night for 'Wellington to complete filling up. The vessel is scheduled to sail finally from the capital on March 3 5 for Southampton and London, via Panama. BETTER PRICES FOR SHIPBREAK-ING.—Breaking-up prices of old steamers are increasing. The market price in Europe at present is about £2 a ton gross for a cargo steamer, and for a passenger liner £2 10s, the brass, etc., in the latter class of ship accounting for the difference. Purchase of old liners by Norwegians for whaling purposes has been partly the cause for the advance in price. WAGE INCREASE FOR GERMAN MERCHANT MARINE.—A wage increase has been granted ships’ personnels in the German merchantile marine as the result of a settlement of the recent dispute between unions of ships’ personnel and the shipowners. A court of arbitration decided on an average increase in the existing scale of wages of 5.6 per cent. This neAv agreement is valid from November 1, 1929, to September 30, 1931. VALACIA SAILS TOMORROW.-The Farmers’ Auctioneering Company, advises that the Cunard steamer Valacia, now at Queen’s Wharf discharging the local portion of her cargo from Antwerp and New York, is to be dispatched at daybreak tomorrow for Wellington, Lyttelton. Timaru and Dunedin to complete unloading. After discharge is finished the vessel is to proceed to Australia to load for Home. RARANGA'S LOADING PROGRAMME.— To continue d: Liverpool c:. : c- •. tic.- Shaw, Saviii Raranga arrived at Wellington early on Wednesday afternoon from Auckland. She is expected to leave again today for Lyttelton, Dunedin and Oamaru to complete discharge. The vessel will then commence loading at Oamaru for London. She will subsequently load at Waikokopu, Picton, Wellington, is due there on March 26, and leaves on .April 1 for Bluff and Port Chalmers to fill ut>. The Raranga is scheduled to sail finally from Port Chalmers on April 10 for London, via* Montevideo. TRANS-PACIFIC CARGO STEAMERS —The Waiotapu leaves Ocean Falls on March 10 for San Francisco and Los Angeles to complete loading for Papeete, Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin, Melbourne and Sydney. The Kairanga is due at San Francisco on March 9. and loads at San Francisco and Los Angeles for Napier, Lyttelton, Bluff, Nelson and ‘Wanganui. The Waikawa left Newcastle on March 3 for Vancouver direct. The Waihemo, from Los Angeles, is due at Napier at 6 a.m. tomorrow and proceeds thence to Lyttelton, Dunedin, Nelson, New Plymouth, and returns to Vancouver, via Westport and Suva. FIRST P. AND O.
