NO SMALLPOX CASES

HEALTH RETURNS FOR FEBRUARY MORE SCARLET FEVER A slight increase in the number of infectious diseases in the four Auckland districts is reported by the Health Department for the month of February There were 176 cases as against 161 for January. The increase was chiefly in scarlet fever, which rose from 49 cases to 62, and in tuberculosis, which accounted for 46 cases as against 25. Both diphtheria and pneumonia, however, had decreased by five each. No cases of smallpox were reported in the province during the month. The 75 cases in the Auckland central district were reported by Dr. J. T. Hughes to comprise as follow:—Scarlet fever, 30; tuberculosis, 16; diphtheria. 11; erysipelas, 4; dysentery, 4; pneumonia, 3: pneumonic influenza, 2; puerperal fever, 2; actinomycosis, 2; tetanus, 1. The figures for North Auckland were:—Tuberculosis, 15; scarlet fever, 5; puerperal fever, 5; pneumonia. 2; enteric fever, 2; erysipelas, 2; and diphtheria, 1; making a total of 32 cases. The 51 South Auckland cases were: —Scarlet fever, 17; tuberculosis, 11; diphtheria, 10; pneumonia, 4; enteric fever, 3; eclampsia, 3; puerperal fever. 2; food poisoning, 1. There were 18 cases in the ThamesTauranga district, being:—Scarlet fever, 10; tuberculosis, 4; diphtheria. I 2; pneumonia, 1; erysipelas, 1.
