Paitonu Defeats Ruanui Narrowly
SPRINT TO ACORA Special to TUB S L S WANGANUI, Thursday. The llangitikei Racing Club's annual meeting concluded today in perfect weather, after the morning had appeared overcast. The track was hard but fast and the attendance was satisfactory. The totnlisator handled .U 10,404, against £11,864 on the second day last year, making £23.531 for the meeting, compared with £d3,3so for 1923. Paitonu and Ruanui had a real setto in the Fraser Memorial, victory going to tlie favourite by the narrow est margin. Acora rather surprised in tile sprint, though Dobbin appeared unlucky. Equitant scored a popular victory in the President’s Hack Cup, beating Airforce narrowly 1 after getting away badly. W. Broughton, rider of Equitant, was suspended for 14 days for crossing Glenrossie at the turn. Sanson Hurdles AVlicnuanui. £ 330. was at a short price for tlie Sanson Hack Hurdles. ; Royal Acre. £‘2TO, being the only other • seriously considered, though there was ! money for Kowhatu. £S7, who showed good form on the opening day. Four i Aces. Red Fane. Whenuanui and First Ruler led Copey and Royal Acre at the first fence, and past the stands Four Aces was showing the way to Whenuanui, Red Lane, Royal Acre and Copey. Rouex made a forward move running for the back stretch, where she actually headed Four Aces, and Red Lane, Whenuanui, Copey and Royal Acre were next. At the halfmile Rouex and Four Aces were two lengths ahead of ‘Whenuanui, Red Lane, Kowliatu and Royal Acre, all bunched. Whenuanui turned for home clear of Rouex, with Kowliatu and Royal Acre coming fast. The favourite was not troubled in the run home and won comfortably by two lengths. Kowhatu managed to hold off Royal Acre by half a length for second place, and First Ruler, Red Lauw and Copey followed. The Maiden The money was right for Golden Flower, £273, Kali, £22S, and Win Acre, £ 160, in the Maiden Handicap, and Lady Lucerne, £125, was at a good price. Lady Lucerne was firsr out from Win Acre, Kali, Golden Flower and Moatoa, and three furlongs from home was a couple of lengths clear of Win Acre, who was a similar distance ahead of Kali, with Golden Flower, Moatoa and Pont I)’Or close up. Lady Lucerne turned for home ahead of Golden Flower, Win Acre Moatoa and Pont D’Or, and came on to score with ease by four lengths from Golden Flower. Two lengths behind the second horse Win Acre appeared to secure third place, but the judge declared for Moatoa, with Pont D’Or fourth, and Kali and Gowanlta next. Fraser Memorial Manly was scratched for the Fraser Memorial. Paitonu, £496, was a litti** better backed than Ruanui, £4SB, with Balloon, £283, also supported. Ruanu: showed the way out of the straight to Paitonu, Opa, Avro and Balloon, and into the back stretch he was followed by Paitonu, Avro and Opa, with Balloon and Briar Root next. Discourse made a forward move along the back, being up with Paitonu behind Ruanui at the half-mile, where Briar Root and Avro were next. Racing for the straight Ruanui. Paitonu and Briar Root were together, Discourse having dropped back to Avro and Balloon Once they straightened up Paitonu and Ruanui drew away to stage a great tussle over tlie last bit. Paitonu just getting home by a head. Two lengths away Balloon, Avro, Briar Root and Discourse finished in a bunch Rangitoto Hack A short price was obtained by supporters of Tenacre in the Rangitoto Hack Handicap, the top weight being entrusted with £452, while Patearoa, £290, was a good second choice. The field raced in line for a couple of furlongs, then Tenacre went to tlie front from Patearoa, Arrow Boy and Kentish Lad. Across the top Tenacre, Arrow Boy, Leisure, Hymestrason and Patearoa. was the order, and they turned for home in much tlie saipe position, save that Patearoa improved his chance. Kentish Lad was running wide. Once the judge was sighted Tenacre came on to win with ease by two lengths, Patearoa. being a similar distance ahead of Kentish Lad. Leisure was fourth and Arrow Bov next to finish. Bailey Handicap Four runners paraded for the Bailey Handicap, the open sprint. Dobbin £371, was preferred to Broad Acre £3ll, with good support for Acora £247. The quartet was bunched for some distance, then Te Atiawa went out in front of Acora, Broad Acre and Dobbin. Acora and Te Atiawa were clear from Dobbin (rails), and Broad Acre, across the top and into the straight, where Dobbin failed to get through. Once straightened up Acora obtained the advantage and held it to the judge, being a. bare half-length to the good at the post, Dobbin finishing fast to*beat Broad Acre by a length for second place. Hack Cup The large field of 14 lined up for the President’s Hack Cup, Latakia
I £ 372, being preferred to Glenrossie ! £237. and Equitant £217, while Air- ! force £126. was rather neglected. 1 Tent call and Equitant got away badly after a long delay, Monaloff showing the way to Glcnrossie, Airforce, Latakia and Auctioneer. Equitant soon made a forward move, and after going a couple of furlongs was in behind Monaloff, Glenrossie and Airforce. Racing for the three furlongs Monaloff , was barely in front of Equitant. with Ten tea 11. Airforce, Glenrossie. Latakia and Auctioneer following. The order inchanged as they turned into the straight. Airforce challenged in the run home, but Equitant. who had taken the lead from Monaloff. held her own to win nicely by a neck from Airforce. who was a length in front of Glenrossie. Monaloff was fourth, just ahead of Auctioneer, with Latakia Aurora Borealis, Democratic and AVarfille following in that order. Killeymoon Handicap Another four-horse field contested the Killeymoon Handicap, but this time the public were right in selecting Callanmore £363, though good support for High Faintin’ £351 and tho other pair caused the favourite to return a great price. Callanmore. was quickest out from the barrier, and showed the way over the first half of the journey to Rameses, Manly and High Falutin’. There was no relative change when they straightened up and in an interesting finish Callanmore retained his advantage, to win bv a neck from Rameses, who was a length in front of High Falutin’, with a couple of lengths back to Manly. Farewel UH andicap Tenacre, rehandicapped 71b, was favourite for the Farewell Hack, carrying £415, with Blue Paper £368. and Quinola £350, best backed of the others. But Golden Flower £l2l, surprised them all. Te Whanga and Grand Jury dwelt at the barrier rise, Tenacre going out in front of Blue Paper and Quinola. Across the top Tenacre and Blue Paper were three lengths ahead of Quinola, Golden Flower, and Te Whanga, with a gap back to the other pair. The order was unchanged as they straightened up for the run to the judge, but then Golden Flower commenced a run that overhauled Tenacre in the last eouple of strides, the outsider paying the biggest price of the day when she got home a head in front of the favourite.
