POULTRY CONFERENCE

REPEAL OF WHEAT DUTIES URGED IMPORTATION OF EGGS Press Association DUNEDIN, Thursday. The conference of the New Zealand Poultry Association was continued toThe high price of feed w is the subject of discussion. An Auckland remi drew attention to the necessity for the repeal of the wheat duties, on the ground that they imposed an unfair burden on the community and were an unfair handicap to the poultry industry. If the Government could not see its way to remove the duty from wheat, some form of poultry wheat pooling should be instituted to ensure North Island poultry keepers getting wheat at a figure more in accord with the price paid by South Island poul-try-keepers. The remit was referred to the executive to take whatever action it thought best. Greater protection against imported eggs was urged in an Auckland remit. A sliding scale tar iff was suggested. A Wellington proposal was that the Government be urged to prohibit the importation of eggs in shell during the currency of the present prohibitive tariff on wheat. The remits were referred to the executive. It was decided to request the Government that, until the proposed grading laws were effectively established, a subsidy should be provided on all eggs actuallv exported rom New Zealand by the first week in November, either f.o.b. or on consignment. The conference approved of the l principle of compulsory grading. ' It was decided to ask for a grant ; of £2OO for the Auckland egg-laying | competition, and £IOO for the Papanui j competition. The following were appointed aa the i association's representatives on the Ad- - ; c-rnment on the proposals for marketj ing:—Rev. D. C. Bates (Wellington). I Mr. Edgley (Auckland), Mr. Hutton ( Otago), and Mr. Bradford (Canter- ■ bury).
