DISASTROUS START

AUCKLAND LOSES TWO WICKETS CHEAPLY PLUNKET SHIELD GAME Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. The final and deciding Plunket Shield irateh of the season commenced between Auckland and Wellington, on the Basin Reserve today, in fine, sunny weather. Auckland won the toss, and Mills and Anthony went in to bat on what appeared to be a good wicket. McGirr opened the Wellington bowling from the southern end, and off his fifth ball clean bowled Mills before a run had been scored. Weir was next and he and Anthony took the score to 8. Anthony, who was facing Massey, then cocked one to Cameron, who was fielding close In at square-leg. After this rather disastrous start for Auckland the batsmen watched the bowling carefully and for time runs came slowly. Gillespie was. uppiauded for a nice drive to the fence off Henderson anil the rate of scoring improved. At 42 McLeod came on in plate of Henderson and his first over was a maiden. Gillespie was batting nicely and soon passed Weir. The 50 went up in as many minutes. Scoring then slowed again, when Gallichan. the slow left-ha rider, came on at the northern end. With the fourth ball of his third over he got Gillespie, when the busman went to hook one to leg. Score: 54 —3—26. The new-comer was Wensley, who soon settled down. He showed a partiality for the leg side and quickly ran to double figures. With the total at 93 Wensley, who was laying the wood on drove one from Gallichan into Lowry's hands at mid-off and was well held. Weir, who had been batting quietly and steadily, was at this stage 31. Gallichan had now taken two wickets for 26. Allcott followed and opened his account with a four off Gallichan. This and a boundary by Weir brought 100 up in 100 minutes. Weir continued to bat steadily and reached 40 with the total at 110. At the luncheon adjournment the score was 122 for four wickets.
