HOLIDAYS IMPOSSIBLE
AUSTRALIANS CANNOT GO ABROAD AMAZING FINANCIAL STATE United —By r, . .:p* Cvpffrinht Reed. 11.30 a.in SYDNEY, Today. It. is now practically impossible i\ r Australians to take t-.eliday trips abroad. This amazing state of affairs is duo to the high rates of the London exchange and the decision of the Commonwealth Bank to prohibit tile c. s.i ins ot Commonwealth notes overseas. The difficulty has arisen by rea>«e.i of Australia’s reduced exports of printary products which are realised on r. London and provide the oversea balances. These have become depleted and the ad\erso balance has beeu increased by heavier import- . Moreover, a substantial increase i t the official rates is likely in the near future. HIGHER PETROL TAX Following a caucus meeting at Cat - lterra. it is stated that there was no likelihood of further increases in direct taxation; nevertheless important amendments to the general taxation law are foreshadowed. Further tariff duties are also contemplated. Another taxation proposal the Government confirmed was an addition; 1 petrol tax of 2Ad a gallon.
