TROTTING TATTLE
POINTERS FOR PALMERSTON SOME USEFUL COMPETITORS Bj A BAYDOB The Manawatu Trotting Club is givea the privilege of opening a useful trotting circuit for the middle portion of the North Island and as a number of the horses taking part at that meeting will viait the succeeding fixtures, the form displayed at Ashhurst will have an interesting bearing on the racing at Hastings, Wanganui, Hawera and New Plymouth. One to be With A promising sort is the young pacer Baron Derby, and he is a worthy son of that good horse. Nelson Derby. At Hastings last June the .Palmerston North colt showed good form although his condition was more suitable Cor show ling purposes. This year he has won at Hutt Dark and if he has gone on the right way in the interval, his sporting owner will not be long in signing the winners’ sheet. Bred for Speed Marion de Oro, as her name implies, is one of the Rey de Oro tribe, and she is gifted with the family speed. On the front of a novice class event at .Ashhurst the Southerner is going to be difficult to beat. On the Improve Teri Kingi has been a disappointing kind of pacer, but since entering Phil Green’s establishment has made j»ood progress. If Teri Kingi does not soon win a maiden heat there will be something wrong with the game. Will Do Better “Abaydo.n” saw a young pacer at New Plymouth last year which wont very close to catching a stake, and only for falling 50 yards from the post might have beaten Benefice. This was Highland Derby, who is booked to sport silk at Ashhurst next week. Changing the Gait Bingen Spiers, one of the Corrigan team, showed a lot of speed as a trotter. but he was a bad breaker. He is now being tried as a pacer and tjie aid of the straps may keep the brother to Jean McElwyn in check. A Useful Sort Rangahou was a rough and ready customer when raced at Hastings last June. This did not stop the Lloyd representative from putting up a great race when he extended the Auckland crack colt Great Parrish over 12 furlongs. A Rod in Pickle Mild Derby, another of the Nelson Derby gets, showed encouraging form At the Wanganui fixture last year. He had quality on his side and if given a reasonable chance in the interim should have made sufficient improvement to make him a good stake earner this season. All Red—All Right All Red gave promise last autumn turning out trumps. . He made a creditable showing at Hawera and New Plymouth, then was at Wanganui and Hastings. and now is well handicapped at the Manawatu fixture. Ngahuia’s stable mate has not long to wait for a prize.
Just Automatic Followers of the popular trotting pastime in the Mar.awatu territory will be waiting anxiously for C. S. Donald, New Zealand's premier reinsruan for the present season, to appear at Ashhurst with Automatic. There will be no fear of his telephone being out of order. Hurrah for St. George C. Donald has another strong string to his Manawatu bow in St. George, who has already gone fast for little money. If he takes on the opposition at Ashhurst. it will be a case of "Hurrah, St. George,** for the punters. Will He Go Right? What an in-and-out customer Kevin F>rae has proved in the past. W. Hughes got an occasional race with him. but owner Itch ell got tired of hie failures and let him go. P. Green has him in hand and if the pacer is good enough for the job Phil is just the chap to make him do it. Great Delight won three good handicaps last autumn in succestion. Then he came to Auckland and beat a good field off a 4.38 peg. Next he visited Addington to run 4.27 4-5 off 4.36, which earned him a 4.33 handicap. A few fail urea from thia mark and now he is back on 4.37. If H. Garnett had him ready for the Manawatu Plate it would be a shame to take the money. All the same he may not ba in the picture at present. Will Soon Be Crowned Thia season the Hawera-trained mare Queen Elizabeth has raced most consistently without earning a, winning certificate. With meetings at Ashhurst and Hastings shortly she soon should receive a decoration. A Solid Pacer When wound up there are not many in the medium classes that have anything on Logan s Pride. His form at Wanganui last year over all distances was impressive and he will soon be saluting the man in the box again. Still in the Picture They are never too old at the ting business to win races, andWakeflfrld is just the type to surprise the punters at any stage of proceedings. A double-gaited customer. he can Pkc-» truly when the opposition is not the top-hole variety. Any Day Now t*djr Author is a mare that should *oon win her way out of the moderate. Recently at Hutt Park she displayed encouraging form, and her day for collecting the rent cannot be very far away. s **y« Well Now Cora Tacks last year raced consistently over all rou es, and as a stayer she showed up well when chasing ( k*eat Delight home in the Taranaki '-op. The mare is a fine specimen. a ®d on her present mark is going to a bold bid in the immediate 'uture to win a prize. 0n « from Nelson Nelsonion, one of Leo Berkett’s Hope alley team, is a useful pacer and his ctory at Westport during the Christsession, knee-deep in mud, showed bp in a good light. He will be a * >o *sibillty in any race Berkott elects ® tackle at the North Island "smalls.” *»'H Battling .Octachord -umJ his owner are both and the ex-Otahuhu trotter
has not ma le nfxlph progress since an the. fields are weak Octachord is alror thy of. ft - cially when the dfetance does not exceed a mile and|&< A Good Trotter L. Berl A _ more than useful trotter in Nelaon Parrish, a son of the American horse, Guy Parrish, who has produced a good youngster in the Auckland-owned colt. Great Parrish. Nelson Parrish can stay for a week, and this will be in his favour at country meetings. Speedy but Uncertain Brian Bingen has a great turn of speed but does not always control it to the best advantage. However, when the fields are not on the large side, W. Orange’s candidate appears to go more solid, and he should not be overlooked at the Manawatu fixture. Solid Plodder Audo Spray plodded along solidly on the final day of the Otahuhu meeting, but third money was the best he could secure. However, his form was suggestive of something better in the near future, and next week may find him higher on the list. Rangitero ran two good races at the Otahuhu fixture. With Lady Ena he was responsible tor White Satin putting up her mile and ahalf record on the opening day. The last day the Longburn trottwo miles that his victor, Paradigm, was asked to knock 10 seconds off his handicap. So Rangitero in less pretentious society should get the best end of the purse.
