ON THE GREEN
Bowls and Bowlers (By JACK BIQU.i
A bright sparkling 1 day, making the ! greens run fast and thus giving the conditions for the game on the green , so beloved by bowlers, and considered by them as the only true basis for a true test of bowling, greeted the devotees of the game on Saturday, for the postponed first round of the interclub pennant competition, “friendly” inter-club and ordinary draw games As the results of the pennant games were known, speculation was largely aroused as to what the ultimate results of the huge event would be. But, It might be truly said, it is still evident that much propaganda is necessary among the respective participants relative to the basic purpose of the event. There is altogether too much importance attached to the actual winning of the games, and not enough stress placed on making the games interesting from a playing point of view with the social inter-club element as the main feature. The centre executive would be well advised to take a sterner viewpoint in the matter by viewing more closely the quotas now entered by some of the larger clubs with the idea of an increase when the time arrives for this work jo be placed in hand. • * * However, the results of Saturday’s fclay in this competition were full of interest. Carlton shot up to its usual place of dominance in the A section, Staging some splendid games against its opposition. Dominion Road, Papatoetoe, and its old-time opponents of last season, the Helensville Club. Waitemata, which had made such an excellent and promising showing in the two initial rounds, went down to the superior play on the day of St. Hellers. Papatoetoe lost four games and came down to third place, while the West End Club, with 25 per cent, of wins, was able to take a place that gives it a good chance for the ultimate honours of the section in the final two rounds. • • • Maoiurewa, Ponsonby, Auckland, Hillsboro axid Otahuhu are the clubs for consideration in the B section. With only two teams in the field, Manure wa may just as easily meet with more superior opposition in the next two rounds, and thus find itself well down in the list when the final round is played. Ponsonby scored eight victories out of 12, making its position very promising. Auckland club players who have not been accustomed to fast greens this season, found them, and strong players as its opposition at Epsom on Saturday. Though making a fine showing against Avondale and against Epsom on its own green, this was nullified and only 50 p**r cent. wins were registered. Hillsboro and Otahuhu retain a good position for the final rounds. The third round will be played on Saturday r xt, and the final round will take place on March 15. If postponement on the latter date is again necessary through rain, this round will be abandoned altogether, as the intersection game and possibly a tie will still have to be played, thus running into an unprecedented late time in the season.
The Canadian bowlers, recently on tour throughout the Dominion, will arrive here next week, on their way back to America from Australia. A splendid enlargement of the photograph of the party has been presented to the Auckland Centre. The picture commemorates the first official visit of Canadian bowlers to these shores.
The Rawhiti Club is closing its greens for reconstruction of the surfaces. It is intended to skim the grass to a depth of two or three inches, allow the soil to lie fallow for a time, and thus bring on full germination of the weeds, and then make a fresh sowing of grass. This method of treatment of bowling greens seems to be the most successful yet adopted, and gives better results than the digging of the surface. Some years ago the Remuera Club had continued difiiculty with its greens, but after treating in this manner the result indicated unprecedented success. Sister clubs, in the meantime, are asked to accommodate for play as many of the Rawhiti Club’s members as possible, and thus help them over their temporary difficulty.
Bowlers are reminded that the entries for the annual pairs tournament close on March 10. Every effort is being made to make, this event as smooth-running and popular as possible. The Centre Executive is anxious to have a record entry of- contestants this season. * * * Owing to the lateness of Easter this year, the Centre Executive has decided to leave the decision to the skips of the winners of the sections as to whether they will play the postsection and final games on the twolife system, or adopt the sudden-death principle for this event. The reason for this unusual procedure is that it ie feared that, owing to the shortness of the days, if the two-life system is continued, the post section and final games will drag on unnecessarily, it will, therefore, be left to all the section winners to register their opinions through their representative skips, and thus decide whether an alteration shal be instituted or carry on with the usual system. * * * Entry forms have been received for the sixth annual Suva bowling carnival. commencing on July 5. The tournament will include the South Seas pennant competition, the open rinks competition, the Pacific championship singles ami the Pacific championship pairs competition. Full particulars will be supplied on application .. th^ nl se 2" retary, Suva Bowling Club, E lji- 1 nose who desire to take in a good bowling carnival during the winter months should avail themselves of this event. * * * The 35 Taranaki bowlers who this week are the guests of the South Auckland Centre, of which the genial Mr. R N. Pilkington is the president, will arrive in Auckland City next week, when a very full list of entertainments and games is being staged in their honour. The Centre Executive na& arranged that members of 37 clubs in the centre will meet the visitors. lne itinerary is as follows: Monday morning.—At Carlton, members of the Dominion Road, Mount Albert and home club. Monday afternoon. —At Epsom. members of the Papatoetoe, Helensville Henderson and home club. Tuesday morning.—At OnehUMa, members of the Onehunga, West E,na and Ponsonby clubs. __ . Many complaints have been made from time to time relative to the use of bowls in this fashion, which must certainly be regarded as distinctly unsportsmanlike. The rule will, therefore, be welcomed generally by players of the sport. TAKAPUNA The singles at Takapuna have got toward finality; the most interesting fact being the emergence of a new aspirant for the honours, in Bennett. With Matthews, the former champion, he was the player in the last of the two-life men struggle, and succeeded in beating Matthews. Hooper and Price have still to play off the last
of the penultimate round, with Hooper favoured for the win. Audley a’ad Cutler, two other former champions, will make up the other competitors. * * * STANLEY At Stanley the singles championship match last week was between R. McMasters, former champion, the surviving two-lifer, and F. M. Cox. The latter won rather easily. The final was played last evening, with a critical crowd of spectators, McMasters winning a spirited game by the narrow margin of three points. The centre having taken March 15, the date set down for the completion of the marine pennant matches, to eke out the centre pennant matches, the marine games will have to be fought out later. At the moment the situation is sufficiently interesting to attract attention on the Shore. The next match is between Stanley and Takapuna. and according to the way in which the “West End” of Devonport plays will depend the issue of. Devonport or Takapuna running out winners. Last Saturday Stanley, with some of its better men away, met Takapuna and was badly handled. CADNESS CUP The Cadness Cup series, for Wednesday players at the Shore, will be concluded next Wednesday, two rinks from each of the four clubs playing on the different greens in rotation. At the moment Devonport has a lead of about 20 points over Takapuna. but the latter may well run up the scores next week, and the possibility keeps the Devonport men thinking. CHAMPION RINK There was a largo attendance of bowlers at the Otahuhu Club’s pavilion on Monday evening, when occasion was taken to present the winners of the champion rink, Messrs. Cook, Sykes, Lippiatt and Gardiner with gold medals won on that occasion. Mr. C. P. Downey, the president, occupied the chair, and in opening the proceedings offered his congratulations and expressed the club’s hearty appreciation that the rink had brought honour to the club. Mr. A. Murdoch added congratuations and suggested the club should have the event recorded by providing a pennant to be hung in the pavilion. Mr. G. V. Pearce also spoke and said he was pleased at the wonderful performance. He said it was quite evident that Otahuhu had as good players as any other club in the centre, and the club should be proud of its champion. In reply, Mr. Gardiner expressed pleasure at winning the championship, not so much from a personal standpoint, but because it had brought honour to the club, and literally placed Otahuhu on the map. He said they won as a team, and he thanked the individual members for the valuable assistance they had rendered. Messrs. Lippiatt, Sykes and Cook also returned thanks for the honour done them by the members. A hearty round of applause greeted the recipients as they received their medals. On the proposal of Mr. Murdoch it was decided to secure a pennant to commemorate the event, and have an enlarged photograph of the team hung in the pavilion.
