The Taumarunui railway employees’ picnic and sports, held at Owhango, attracted an exceptionally large crowd. The special train was crowded, three guards being in control. The principal events resulted: —A.S.It.S. Handicap: C. E. Halford, 1; C. H. Derbridge. 2. Visitors' Handicap: J. Matthews, 1; H. Pennington, 2. E.F.C.A. Handicap: W. Holder, 1; E. Murrow, 2. R. 0.1. Handicap: J. Finlay, 1; A. M. Hamilton, 2. 100yds. Railway Championship: C. H. Derbridge, 1; J. Finlay, 2. Band Members’ Race: J. Matthews, 1; J. Wells, 2. Mrs J. F. Waldegrave’s challenge cup was won by the Kaitieke Club in the final game under the Retaruke Cricket Sub-Association The same club also won the banner, the .first occasion on which both trophies have fallen to one set of players. Despite additions made last year, the secondary department of the Taumarunui District High School is again so overcrowded that it is necessary for one of the classes to be taught in a shelter shed. At the monthly meeting of the committee the chairman, Mr. A. T. Driffll, said that the Education Board evidently did not realise what a fast-growing centre Taumarunui was. It was resolved to request the board to build another room before the winter weather commences. At the annual meeting of the Taumarunui Boys’ Band, the statement showed a satisfactory position. Officers were elected:—President, Mr. G. E. Manson; secretary, Mr. G. S. Manson; committee, Messrs. J. Brown. S. Dryland, F. H. P. Rogers. H. Tomlinson. A. G. Ivenderdine and G. Wells. The Borough Council is to appoint two representatives.
