MOTHERS’ UNION
FIRST QUARTERLY MEETING MRS. AVERILL PRESIDES Mrs. Averill, president, presided over the first quarterly meeting for 1930 of the Council of the Auckland Mothers’ Union. The meeting opened with prayer, after which the secretary, Mrs. Simkin, read the minutes of the last council meeting. Announcement was made of a special day, March 25, for holding a corporate communion service for members of the Mothers’ Union at St. Mary’s Cathedral Church at 10.30, and also the observance in the various parishes of Mothering Sunday on March 30, the fourth Sunday in Lent. A wreath of pohutukawa blossom in ice has been forwarded by the Auckland Mothers’ Union to England to be placed on the Cenotaph in London on Anzac Day. The freezing and shipping companies have shown their usual courtesy in sending the wreath free of charge and, on the suggestion of Miss O’Neill, who has carried through all the arrangements, a hearty vote of thanks to these companies was passed at the meeting. Mrs. Averill will accompany Archbishop Averill when he leaves on March 11 by the Aorangi to attend the Lambeth Conference. A special day of prayer for members of the Mothers’ Union for the success of the conference has been fixed for July 11. Arrangements for these services are to be made by the vicars in their various parishes. During Mrs. Averill’s absence the quarterly meetings of the Auckland Council will be taken by Mrs. Coates, vice-president. Archbishop Averill arrived just before the close of the meeting and addressed the council on the Bible in Schools Bill. The Archbishop and Mrs. Averill received the best wishes of the council for a safe and enjoyable trip.
