TROTTING

By “ABAYDOS”

Handicappers Hold Varied Opinions

WHICH IS RIGHT? MANAWATU OR HASTINGS? The Manawatu and Hawke's Bay handicappers are not very much in harmony when it comes to assigning the marks of several pacers and trotters which have been entered for the respective meetings this month. In a number of instances there is only a difference of 12yds, the majority being penalised to this extent by the Hastings adjuster as against the compilation of the handicaps framed by the official for Manawatu. There are a few cases, however, where the difference of opinion between Mr. Paul and Mr. Simpson, as to the handicaps certain competitors are entitled to, extends to a good margin, and these comparisons are of interest to students of the popular pastime. The greatest variance is shown with Kevin Brae, an ex-Mitchell representative, who proved a big disappointment to followers of the Longburn stable for tone time before he found new quarters. At Ashhurst Kevin Brae has been placed on 3.37 In 12 furlongs, and 3.56 at a furlong longer jaunt, which is distance. Mr. Paul in a mile and ahalf event at Hastings, with a 3.36 limit, asks Kevin Brae to step off a 3.34 peg. If this allotment is the 1 orrect one, the pacer would look to have good prospects at Ashhurst in his essays. In the 13-furlong race on the Manawatu card, St. George is set to concede Kevin Brae 12 yards, while at Hastings the latter is giving the Southerner 24 yards over a 12-furlong course. Queen Elizabeth Opinions are awry again with Queen Elizabeth, and more particularly in the 10-furlong heats at each place is the difference noticeable. Mr. Paul places the llawera mare on 4.43 for two miles, and 2.53 over the shorter

route, while Mr. Simpson assesses her at 4.44 and 2.55 respectively. If A. Corrigan’s Man o’ "War pacer has a show at Hastings, how rosy must her prospect be in the mile and a-quarter event at Ashhurst. Queen Elizabeth has yet to prove her ability as a twomiler, but her prowess over 10 and 12 lurlongs is well known, and her form this season, without scoring a win. has been suggestive of better things. The Nelson-trained square-gaiter, Nelson Parrish, lias also received more liberal treatment at the hands of the Manawatu mark-framer than is the ease under the Hawke’s Bay adjuster. At the latter fixture L. Berkett’s candidate is asked to go a 4.55 gait for two miles, but 4.57 is considered a fair question to ask him in the opinion of Air. Simpson. At the Manawatu fixture he is given 12 yards from Hangitero (4.56). but Mr. Paul for the Bast Coast function places them on an equal footing. Here both trotters are handing out 48 yards to Brian Bingen, while at Ashhurt Brian is on the same peg as Nelson Parrish, and in receipt of 12 yards from Hangitero. There is lack of agreement over the novice, Nelson Gara, to the tune of -4 yards, on -which mark he is handicapped in the 3.45 class at Hawke's Bay, in a similar section at the Manawatu fixture. Nelson Gara is off the front line. With handicappers >etting two different problems, backers will be watching closely for the key to the situation, and as the Manawatu fixture comes tip for decision first, a good line should be gained on the prospects of the various candidates referred to at the Hastings meeting. In any case, it will be interesting to s *e which adjuster has made the correct summing-up of the position. Some Comparisons The appended list shows some of the differences referred to: — Manawatu. Hawke’s Bay. Mile and a-quarter •
