BEEF EASIER
Late Commercial —
WESTFIELD STOCK SALE WESTFIELD, 2.30 p.m. One of the heaviest yardings of beef for several weeks came forward to the Westfield fat stock sale today. The quality was very mixed and although there was a fair percentage of extra well finished sorts, the big majority were only indifferently fattened and not very attractive; this was especially the case in the cow and heifer sections, where a yarding of approximately 450 head was drawn mostly from the dairy herds of the province; many looked as if they had not long been dried oft*. The steers offering was the biggest this summer, approximately 400 head coming forward to meet with rather an erratic demand; only extra wellfinished steers met with keen competition, mediocre and indifferentlyfinished sorts dragging under the hammer; passings were frequent. Best ox made up to 40s a hundred; average medium weight ox, 36s to 37s a hundred: best cow made to 34s a hundred; ordinary and secondary cow and heifer, 25s to 31*s a hundred. Top price of the day was secured for a line of exceptionally heavy prime show bullocks on account L. Sisam, Whakatane; one extra heavy prime four-year-old prize bullock went to A. F. Cooper, Manukau Road, for £l9 ss; an extra choice prime show three-year-old steer in the same line went to R. and W. Hellaby, Limited, for £l7. Heavy prime steers, generally, made to £lF> 15s; medium. £l2 17s 6d to £l4; light and small, from £9 ss; heavy cow and heifer, to £lO 10s; medium, £7 10s to £8 15s; light ancf small, £6 2s 6d to £7 ss; unfinished, from £4. Calves sold practically on a par with late rates; there was little life in the bidding and prices eased toward the close. An extra prime show yearling on account Paterson Brothers (Takapuna property) went to D. Brideson, Epsom, for £ll 7s 6d; an extra prime show bucket-fed calf on account Guy "Wellington, Te Awamutu, went to D. Brideson for £9 12s fid. On© of the best lines of station-bred calves seen in the yards for many weeks was offered on account A. Lindquist, Paparoa. 15 Hereford heifer calves averaged £ 4 3s fid. Six P.A. calves on account the estate of the late G. B. Ariell, Paparoa, averaged £4 13s. Heavy prime runners generally made up to £B, vealers to £4 15s. Several small lines of extra choice station heifers sold toward the close made up to £l2 2s fid. Slightly under an average yarding of sheep was made up of a very mixed assortment. A start was not made on this section until after 2.30.
