MT. ALBERT ROAD

TAR-SEALING PROPOSAL The question of tlie reconstruction and maintenance of Mount Albert Roads between Royal Oak and the Mount Albert boundary has been the subject of consideration by the Mount Roskill Road Board since the proposal for a concreting loan ws rejected by the ratepayers. Having been declared a main highway the Highways Board became partly responsible for its upkeep, by contributing £2 for each £1 spent. At last evening’s meeting of the Road Board the Works Committee reported that the conditions have materially changed since the estimate was made, and it now finds that the cost is greatly in excess of the estimate. It therefore recommended that the engineer prepare an estimate of the cost of tarsealing the surface from Crown Street to the Mount Albert Borough’s boundary for a width of 18ft, and on receipt of the engineer’s estimate that the Highways Board be asked if it will agree to the proposal and subsidise the work on a £2 for £1 basis. Acting on the committee’s suggestion, th» board’s engineer. Mr. John Dawson, later recommended that application be made to th-e Main Highways Board for a grant as from April 1 next, for the sum of £2 for every £1 spent by the Road Board for tar-sealing this road at an estimated cost of £ 3,600. The board agreed to adopt thi« course.
