CONFERENCE OPENS

CONGREGATIONAL UNION BUSINESS BEGINS TONIGHT Delegates from all over the • Dominion are now in Auckland for the annual conference of the Congregational Union of New Zealand, which opened this morning in the Beresford Street Church. There is a record number attending this 3’ear. Southern delegates arrived by express this morning, being welcomed at the Auckland station by the Rev. Lionel B. Fletcher and by officials. At 10.30 a private meeting was held to discuss church organisation and the programme for the conference. Business will begin in earnest this evening, when a public welcome will be extended to delegates at a tea. This will be followed at 7 o’clock by the induction of Pastor A. V. Whiting, of New Lynn. The presidential address will be given by the chairman of the Unton, the Rev. Frank de Lisle, of Napier, at the public meeting at 8 o’clock. A series of addresses will be given at the evening meetings, the general theme being "The unchanging faith in changing world.” The Rev. Lionel Fletcher will speak tomorrow evening on "Modern Substitutes for God,” and this will be followed on Friday evening by a study of “The Slide to Paganism,” by the Rev. R. C. Roberts Further public meetings will be held every night until Wednesday next, the speakers including the Revs. D. Gardiner Miller. Albert Mead, and H. W Newell.
