CABLED SHAKESPEARE!
PRODUCER SEEKS FILM RIGHTS OF PLAYSf MESSAGE WAS DELIVERED LONDON, Monday. The most comical thing that has happened at Stratford-on-Avon since 1922, when an American tried to buy the town clock, is the receipt of the following cablegram: “William Shakespeare, playwright, care of the Mayor of Stratford-on-Avon, England. Re your film play ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ now being screened at Toronto, X am informed you have written several other plays which have not yet been filmed. “How much do you require to sell me the film rights for Canada and the United States of all the other plays you have written or may write? Please cable immediately. Goldstein, Kingston Road, Toronto, Canada.” The cablegram was sent via the Western Union line and delivered in the usual manner. This says much for the simple faith and professional honour of the service. Inquiries have revealed the existence of a Mr. Goldstein, who is in the film business at Toronto.
