HON. H. L. MICHEL DEAD
PROMINENT PUBLIC MAN Press Association HOKITIKA, Today. The death has taken place of th* Hon. H. L. Michel, M.L.C., at the ag* of 75. The Hon. Henry Leslie Michel was born at Newcastle. New South Wales, in 1855, coming to New Zealand when a boy. From 1885 to 1903 he was a member of the Hokitika Borough Council, holding office as Mayor for 14 years. He became chairman of the first Charitable Aid Board, established in 1885, the Hokitika Harbour Board, the Westland Educat ion Board and the Hokitika High School Board of Governors. Mr. Michel was prominent in the Grand Lodge of New Zealand Freemasons, and also took an active interest in fire brigade work. He was a president of the Fire Brigades Association. On the death of Richai n John Seddon. he contested the 'Vest - land seat in 1906. but was defeated by Mr T. E. T. Seddon. On the death of Sir A. Guinness he was a candidate in the Grey electorate, heading the poll on the first ballot, but losing to Mr. P. C. Webb on the second. A justice of the peace, Mr. Michel became a member of the Legislative Council 12 years ago.
