OPOSSUMS V. BIRDS

PROFESSOR’S DISCOVERIES Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. Does the spread of the lucrative opossum affect the welfare of New Zealand’s bird life? That question has been frequently put to the authorities within the last two years and it has been held in some quarters that the opossum not only eats the food of native birds, but consumes their eggs and occasionally the young ones from the nests. Professor Kirk, who was asked by the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. P. A. dc la Perrelle, to make a scientific investigation of the stomachs of many opossums, has forwarded to the Minister his preliminary report. The professor states that of the stomachs of some 266 opossums examined, in only one case was he able to detect animal matter. He goes on to say in his report that the fruits and seeds of the forest which form the food of native birds are freely eaten by opossums.
