Hawke's Bay Double Claims Attention
AUCKLAND’S GOOD HAND With the declaration of handicaps for the Hawke’s Bay Trotting Club’s forthcoming Fixture, and the presence of several Aucklanders in the chief events, keen interest will be aroused in the Hastings double. As many of the competitors for the East Coast main events arc engaged at the Manawatu meeting, three days earlier, the form at Ashhurst should prove a very fair guide for backers at Hastings. At the latter fixture, however, there will be a few candidates taking part in the cup which will not be seen out in the Manawatu Platts Again in some instances there hu.i been a difference of opinion revealed by the respective ha ndicappers that may alter the complexion of affairs with regard to some of the aspirants for the trophies.
Ih the two principal events at Hastings several well-known Auckland representatives claim engagements and some of them at least are sure to set tlie opposition a stiff task to head them off. The Cup The promising young Wells ford pacer, Gumdigger, is one off the front with more than an average chance. lJe is a typical cup candidate, and while his • successes have been achieved in less pretentious society, he should have improved sufficiently to give him rosy prospects at Hastings. Mountain Princess, another improving sort from Otuhuhu, is also on the front and will add interest to the event. Sir Guy and .Little Guy are a pair that must be watched at Manawatu, and if in the limelight at Ashhurst will be troublesome at the succeeding function. Hawke’s Hay will be solidly represented by All Red, who last year showed promise of developing into a useful pacer. He has been off the scene for a time, but a race at Ashhurst should .sharpen him i:p. Pavlova comes into this cup on 12yds better terms than in the Manawatu Plate, and an idea of her stamina will be gained if she tackles the latter item. Dealer (24yds) appears to be on his right handicap, and if it is his day on, he will give the opposition a lot of cheek. A. point farther back is a tough trio, Arachno (last year’s winner). Gang Avva’ and Baby Logan. On recent doings Gang Awa’ will appeal most, Queen Elizabeth, Native Hero and Great Delight have each got off 12yds lighter with the Manawatu adjuster, but Native Hero, who, with the improving Hilltop, is on 4.42, will make it Interesting for the opposition. Hilltop is another possibility, but at this stage of proceedings there may be most call for Gumdigger, All Red Dealer and Gang Awa’. The Second Leg It 5s in the 10-furlong heat that the two handicappers have differed most over the ability of Queen Elizabeth. At Manawatu she is on 2.55. while the Hawke’s Bay adjuster makes her out a 24yds better mare. If Mr. Paul’s contention is correct, then the President’s Handicap at Ashhurst will not be hard for Queen Elizabeth, and if she proves as good as some think, she will still be a nuisance at Hastings from the back mark of the Karamu Handicap. With her is Kichore, and it is worthy of note that in respect to his mark both handicappers arc of the same frame of mind. Baby Logan, the giant of the racing game, is on 48yds, and if in the right order, will be a hard nut to crack. Just in front of him are Pavlova. Item and Dealer, and of the trio the Epsom-trained mare will probably have most friends. Her recent form was impressive and as she will improve with racing, it will take something smart to head her off at this journey. Gumdigger is also engaged, but the big race may be his special mission, but if he misses a penalty and starts here the others will know they are at the races. This distance should suit Mountain Princess, and if the Otahuhu mare is kept in reserve for this go. she will be the hardest to head oft. «ir Guy is another smart customer and his form at Ashhurst will give followers of the pastime an idea or what can be expected of him at the following meeting. Two useful pacers are on the end, and if Peter Lloyd was at his best, the rest would have a good view of the proceedings. Fliton is speedy, but not one of the every-day variety, so early selectors may pin faith to Sir Guy. Mountain Princess Gumdigger and Pavlova.
