Proves a Good One

EAGER ROSE DOES BETTER Kingfield Suprises in Sprint THERE were more surprises at Te Arolia yesterday. Last to leave the mark. Eager Rose, who won the Cup on (Saturday, again proved herself by winning the big event, the President’s Handicap, after a tough finish with Royal Doulton. It was a splendid performance on the winner’s part. Kingfield sprang a real surprise in the Farewell, and other mild shocks for backers were administered by Motere, Foot Rule and Awamutu. Altogether it was a disastrous meeting for the favourites, who fared badly..

The weather was delightful, if 3 bit too warm at times, and there was once again a large attendance. However, the consistent failure of favourites was not encouraging—even if two wins and a second did result in a small profit on the day—and the result was a slump in the totalise tor returns, but it was comparatively small. Yesterday the machine Handled £ 25.519, against on the concluding day of the last annual meeting—a decrease of £1,4355. On the two days the turnover was .C 56.564, compared with £58.956, which represented a drop of £2,092 on the meeting. This result can be regarded as satisfactory in every way. Close Finishes Once again there were several thrilling finishes witnessed, the majority of the events being hotly contested. The course was in excellent order. Hespite this there were several accidents. one horse falling in the second race and no less than five in the fourth race. There was no room for complaint of any sort in. regard to the management of the fixture, which was excellently conducted throughout. Notes on the racing and details of results are appended. Manawaru Hurdles j Ah Wera and Wako King were the i course scratchings in the Manawaru j Hurdles, leaving 10 to go to the post, j most money being found for Saturday’s winner, Star Comet (£554), Paumai carrying £399 and the winner, Pouri, £242. Daylight, Grand Arch and Glenstar led to the first hurdle, hut leaving the straight Waltzer was clear iof Daylight, Grand Arch, Foxhound, 1 Ring Potoa, Glenstar and Pouri, and ■ by the time they were well into the hack stretch Waltzer hod increased his lead to several lengths, with Grand Arch, Daylight, Star Comet, Ring Potoa, Foxhound, Taumai, Glenstar and Pouri following. Approaching the fence at the five furlongs Grand Arch made a fast run and headed Waltzer, out he fell at the next fence, leaving Taumai and Daylight (together) to carry on into the straight just clear ;of Star Comet, Pouri and Glenstar. It | was a good finish between Taumai and j Pouri. the latter wearing his rival down i to win by a neck, with Glenstar one and a-half lengths away in third place. Daylight was next and then came Star Comet, Archeen, Ring Potoa. Foxhound, and Waltzer. Pouri pulled up lame. Elstow Handicap There were no defections in the Elstow Handicap and when the totalisator figures were rung up Tenakoe (£612) was favourite over Aggressive (£483), with the second horse, Biddy Comet (£268) again at good odds. When the field had settled down Vital was out making play from Princess Snow, Biddy Comet, Te Apurangi, Tenakoe and Sir Mond, but with two and a-half furlongs covered, Te Apurangi and Biddy Comet were together piloting Vital, Glenson, Sir Mond, Tenakoe, Royal Visitor and Aggressive. The favourite took charge three furlongs from home and was first into the straight clear of Biddy Comet, Vital, Tetrarchate and Glenison, who were all in a bunch. Nothing headed Tenakoe in the run to the post and he wound up a comfortable winner over Biddy Comet by a length. Sir Mond was three-quarters of a length away in third place, and then followed Tetrarchate, Vital, Glenison, Royal Visitor, Princess Snow and Nassau Lady. Electric Handicap A baker’s dozen came out for the. Electric Handicap, and Bells of Shandon’s easy win on Saturday saw him at extremely short odds, carrying £1,033, Wild Time, £4ll, and Gold Day, £397, being other main fancies. The winner Footrule, £l9B, was at a double-figure quotation. Snow Lap lost his rider and bolted, taking no part in the race. Karangapai again got away badly, Leasehold also dwelling. Tradesman and Footrule were prominent early, attended by Bells of Shandon, Betterment, Click Clack, Gold Day, Lady Court and Wild Time, and at the half-mile the first pair were still making the pace, Brilliant Lady, Gold Day, Click Clack, Lady Court, Wild Time and Bells of Shandon following, with Manawhenua last. Footrule led across the top, and into the straight was leading a bunch comprising Brilliant Lady, Tradesman, Gold Day, Bells of Shandon, Leasehold, Wild Time and Betterment, the last two being wide out. Footrule did not weaken with the pressure on and comfortably beat Gold Day by two lengths, with Tradesman a bare length back third. Leasehold led Bells of Shandon, Click Clack, Karangapai, Manawhenua, Betterment, Brilliant Lady and Lady Court past the judge’s box. Piako Hack Helium was the medium of solid support in the Piako Hack Handicap and he had a pronounced call over the second choice, Grand Tea, the figures being £673 and £453 respectively. while the dividend-payers.

Motere and Haviland, were both at nice prices, the former carrying £2Ol and Haviland £269. Nassock received the worst of the start, and it was left to Grand Tea to lead out of the straight from Spring Abbey, Red Day, Haviland, Always. Archieval, Motere, Arikitoa. Helium. Ivawini and Thurnus. Passing the six furlongs Motere was in charge from Haviland, Always. Archieval. Spring Abbey, Grand Tea, Thurnus and Helium, and with another furlong covered an accident occurred. Arikitoa fell, and over l vim- came Grand Tea, Always, Helium and Thurnus. Haviland then joined Motere in the lead and the pair led across the top and into the straight slightly in advance of Spring Abbey and Red Day. with Nassock. Archieval, Always and King’s Guard three lengths back. It was a good finish. Motere securing the verdict by a neck over Haviland. with Red Day only a similar distance away in third place. Just out of a place was Spring Abbey, and then came Nassock Archieval, Kawini and King’s Guard.

President’s Handicap A dozen went to the post for the President’s Handicap, Lucy Rose being the only withdrawal in a fine beting race, in which the public selections were Eager Rose, £516. Mithra, £447, and Royal Doulton, £378. The favourite was last to leave the barrier, Le Choucas leading round the bend from Mithra, Royal Doulton, Desert Glow, Pompeius, Sir Russell, Eager Rose, Marble King, High Pitch and Maori Boy, but by the time they had reached the six furlongs Mithra and Royal Doulton were right up with Le Choucas, the trio being attended by Desert Glow, Pompeius, High Pitch, Marble King, Eager Rose, King Emerald, Sir Russell and Maori Boy. Crossing the top and into the straight Le Choucas, Mithra and Royal Doulton were all abreast, with Eager Rose showing up prominently ahead of Pompeius, Desert Glow and Sir Russell. It was a bumping finish between the favourite and Royal Doulton, Eager Rose just managing to get her head in front and stall off defeat by a neck, i with Mithra another neck back in third place. King Emerald was a good fourth and after him came Pompeius, Desert Glow, Le Choucas, Sir Russell, Maori Boy, High Pitch and Marble King. Wairakau Handicap Chief support in the Wairakau Handicap was accorded Currajong (£64.1), with Volimond (£568) a good second choice and the winner, Awamutu (£269) at a remunerative figure. Awamutu, on the rails, began with his usua.l smartness and in turn followed Valstreet, Currajong, Master Latour, Quinsilia, Arihana, Always, Wild Country and with two furlongs left behind Awamutu's attendants were Master Latour, Valstreet, Snow Prince, Currajong, Arihana, Quinsilia and Always, with Volimond bringing up the rear. Awamutu still had sufficient in reserve in the run home to stall off a challenge issued vi>y the favourite, Currajong, and he beat the latter by three parts of a length, the unlucky Volimond finishing strongly to secure third place, a neck away from Currajong. Then came Lucky Alice. Valstreet, Master Latour, Snow Prince, Quinsilia, and ArihanaTourist Handicap Abbess failed to meet her engagement in the Tourist Handicap, in which most money was forthcoming l'or Vali (£1,159), Envoy (£722) and Prince of Orange (£481), and the trie filled the places. Vali began best and led Roman Pearl, Lunette and Prince of Orange, but passing the five furlongs Partial Eclipse and of Orange were showing the way to Vali, Lunette, Roman Pearl and LuminaryPartial Eclipse still had control when they swept round the bend, with Envoy, Prince of Orange, Roman Pearl and British King all racing prominently in that order. Envoy fought out a good finish in fine style, and got the verdict over Prince of Orange by half a length, with Vali a neck away third. Right up fourth was British King, who led Roman Pearl, Partial Eclipse, Lunette, Luminary, and Unoco. Farewell Handicap

There was a double-barrelled surprise in the final event, for which Lucy Rose £983 was a firm favourite, while there was good money also for Leitrim £674 and Mervette £559. The eventual dividend payers, Kingfield and Prince Val, were backed to the extent of £IBB and £395 respectively, the former being at good double figures. White Ringlet led out of the tapes from Leitrim, Kingfield, Town Bird, Value. Romford, Abbess, Takutama, Prince Val and Lucy Rose. Before they had gone a furlong and ahalf Town Bird had reached the front from Kingfield, Value, Leitrim, Romford, Abbess, Takutama, Prince Val, White Ringlet, Lucy Rose and Mervette, the favourite being in an almost hopeless position. Crossing the top Lucy Rose moved up fast, and was in a bunch behind Town Bird, Kingfield, Prince Val and Abbess at the turn into the straight. With Town Bird fading out Kingfield and Prince Val were left in front, the former finally winning by a neck. Lucy Rose did remarkably well to get up third, only a head behind Prince Val. Value was a good fourth, and next in order were. Takutama, Town Bird. Abbess, White Ringlet, Romford. Leitrim and Mervette, the last pair being well beaten.
