TRIED TO DECEIVE POLICE Press Association GISBORNE, Today. A Chinese, Ting Sam, pleaded guilty in tlie Police Court today to remaining in New Zealand beyond the period for which his temporary permit had been granted. When approached by the police, accused produced a receipt for the full tax, but when interviewed later and confronted with a photograph lie confessed that the receipt was not his.

The magistrate inflicted a fine of £ls and ordered his deportation.
