EARNED HIS PASSAGE
CAPTAIN SPEAKS WELL OF STOWAWAY MAGISTRATE LENIENT The captain paying: him a glowingtribute, Laurence Nasey was given a chance when he appeared at the Police Court this morning on a charge of stowing away on the Hauraki at Los Angeles. Nasey, a mechanic, aged 25, pleaded guilty to the offence, which was said to have been committed on February Senior-Sergeant O’Grady said Nasey had reported to the officers as soon as the ship was at sea. The captain spoke in glowing terms of him. He had evidently worked well and behaved himself. The company did not want the man punished and it did not want his fare paid as he had more than earned it on the voyage. Captain Norton supported the police statement and Nasey was convicted and discharged. “Perhaps the captain will sign him on and take him back again,” suggested Chief-Detective Hammond.
