SHIPPING INCREASE
NEW BRITISH COMPANY FORMED IMPROVEMENTS TO YARDS LONDON, Thursday. The elimination of redundant and obsolete shipyards and more economical working through concentrated production and financial assistance to shipbuilders are among the avowed objects of National Shipbuilders’ Security, Limited. This concern has just been registered with a nominal capital of £IO.OOO, with power to borrow up to £3,000,000. The promoters say consolidation has been in progress steadily for the past two years, but further concentration is imperative. Warship building, which before the war represented 25 per cent, of the total tonnage, now is~ a mere one-seventh. Britain maintains supremacy in the industry, but rationalism is necessary to place it on a permanently sound basis. The proprietors of most of the big yards favour the scheme.
