A message cabled on Thursday said: The roar of an explosion which was heard afar sent hundreds of women hurrying to a pit-head at Haydock, Lancashire. Rescuers found flames shooting along the galleries in the colliery which were filled with fumes. These caused several men to collapse. Five miners were killed and 25 were badly burned. Two women doctors accompanied the rescuers into the blazing pit.
