NATIONAL RIFLES

SHOOTING AT TRENTHAM WIND SPOILS SCORING * i * Press Associafto/i TRENTHAM, Friday. The National Rifle Association meeting was continued at Trentham today. The Trentham range is known to marksmen as tricky on account of sudden wind variations. Today was warm and sunny, but wind conditions did not favour competitors in the afternoon. The wind veered round to all points of the compass without warning, and those who struck bad patches fared badly. Many reliable shots crashed, including Captain W. N. Masefield and F. James, last year’s belt-winner and runner-up respectively. Important shooting started late in the afternoon, when the first match counting for the belt was fired. In this match, G. Eyles (Napier) finished with 49, his fifth shot being an inner. H. Searle (Nelson), who is a tyro, secured the Imperial aggregate with 201 points, G. Harrison (Kaponga) being second with 200. The Sir Logan Campbell Shield, which goes to the South Island for the first time, is a magnificent trophy. It was won outright by the Defence Club, Wanganui, and re-presented to the association for competition as a challenge shield. Formerly the champion belt could be won outright, and Captain Wales, Otago, accomplished this by being successful two years in succession, which necessitated the jfrocuring of a new one. Arthur Baliinger, Wellington, won the belt three times at intervals, but re-presented it, since when it became a challenge trophy. D. Roots, Patea, has also won the belt three times, and the present holder, Captain Masefield, Blenheim, won it in 1914. With the advent of deliberate shooting the scores improved. In the Tisdall Memorial, S. Higgs (New Plymouth) secured a possible. O. Ching, who was second in the B Grade, is a son of F. Ching, the well-known rifleman. H.
