INSPECTOR FREED

CHARGE BY COMMUNIST DISMISSED STORY OF INTIMIDATION SYDNEY, Thursday. Police Inspector Mackay was charged at Kurrikurri today with assaulting and using threatening words to a Communist named Patou. The incident was alleged to have occurred when the man was under detention in the Cessnock police station one day after the police had prevented a demonstration in connection with the coalfields trouble. Paton alleged that the inspector struck him on the face and ordered him in very strong language to be out of the town within 24 hours or he would be “fixed” ror all time. Questioned about Communism, complainant said he had no time for the Union Jack or the Australian flag. Three corroborating witnesses avowed that they were Communists and refused to be sworn on the Bible. For defendant it was denied that any assault had taken place or that a threat was made. The case was dismissed.
