SCULLING BATTLE

TOMORROW’S RACE ON HOKIANGA MASON AND HADFIELD A race for the sculling: championship of New Zealand is to be held on the beautiful waters of the Hokianga Harbour tomorrow*, the contestants being James Mason, present holder of the championship, and Darcy Hadfleld former world’s champion. Following is a brief summary of the records of each man: Darcv Hadfleld.— Age 40, born at Nelson: weight 12st 101 b. racing colours, blue and gold. Performances: Holder of amateui New Zealand championship for seven years: Army champion in Paris. He never lost a race on the Thames England. during two seasons, and won the Dominion Sculls at Henley Regatta, England, receiving the Kingswood Cup valued at 50 guineas. He has won 6S amateur races. His first professional race was against Dick Arnst on tha Wanganui River in January, 1922, forth* world’s championship, when h« won by 10 lengths. In the same year he lost to Jim Paddon. At Sydney, on the Paramatta River, he won the handicap £l5O from ! scratch. He rowed against W. McDevitt. James Mason and George Ceruti for the Australasian championship on the Northern Wairoa River in June. 1924. when he came second, being defeated by a length. Loafer, at Tauranga. he met Pal Hannan for the New Zealand championship. and was defeated, but th«» conditions were most unsuitable for sculling. He lias not contested a race since. James Mason.—He is also a New Zealander, 41 years of age. weight 12st 61b. racing colours blue. This is his fourth race in a professional contest. He beat the Australian sculler. George Ceruti, by several lengths on the Whangarei River in 1928. and the following year Pat Hannan scored a win against him on the same course. He has a number of wins to his credit as an amateur.
