ROMANTIC TRIP

MESSAGES FROM NOVA SCOTIA TO WAIPU LINK WITH PIONEERS There is romance in the visit of Mrs. B. H. Calkin, of Nova Scotia to New Zealand. Her family is related to those adventurers who left Novia Scotia years ago in boats of their own building and settled at Waipu in the North of Auckland. Mrs. Calkin is the wife of Dr. B. H. Calkin. They arrived in Auckland today from Motuihi after being quarantined there since they left the Aorangi on Monday. Dr. and Mrs. Calkin journeyed 1o New Zealand to join the Empire Farmers, who are touring the Dominion. They will leave Auckland tomorrow to join the party. “ I want the people of Waipu to know that they are not forgotten in Nova Scotia,” Mrs. Calkin said this morning. “When we left I had all sorts of wishes and messages to send to them, but now I do not think I shall be able to go to Waipu to see them. “Tell them that my full name is Ellenor Mackenzie Calkin—they will understand. And be careful about the ‘Mac’ ” she added. It will be recalled that Waipu was settled in the early days by Scottish folk, who had come all the way from Nova Scotia. These hardy pioneers left Scotland for Nova Scotia but found conditions so bad there that they built there own ships to bring them to New, Zealand. That voyage is one of the romances of the early days of New Zealand and the descendants of the pioneers who still live at Waipu are proud of a noble record. Mrs. Calkin had hoped to visit Waipu during her stay in New Zealand but unfortunately the isolation on Motuihi has forced her to cancel the trip. However, her friends will find her by letter with the Empire Farmers.
