Buck, adult.—Fur Farms, Ltd., 1,2 and SHEEP IMPROVEMENT WORK FOR QUALITY IN SOUTHDOWNS FAVOURED IN NORTH An important development in sheep breeding in Auckland Province was indicated by Mr. A. J. Cooper, the well-known Wairarapa judge, in commenting yesterday on the quality of the sheep exhibits at the show. Mr. Cooper finds that Auckland bleeders are paying much greater attention to producing quality, especially among Southdown sheep, a breed apparently much favoured in the North.
Air. Cooper said the entries in Southdowns this year were larger than those of last year. In some sections, where live years ago there would have been perhaps one exhibitor only, there were now seven or eight exhibitors. “Southdowns really have been improved wonderfully,” Air. Cooper said. “The classes are better in number and quality—results, I should say, of more extensive fat lamb breeding. There is much to anticipate in Southdown breeding in Auckland. It is apparent that Auckland breeders were looking to Southdowns in the breeding of fat lambs.” Air. Cooper said the Shropshire entries, though poor, included, some good specimens of the breed. The Suffolk and the Ryeland entries were also small, but again good quality specimens were in evidence. Large, well-fleeced sheep were plentiful in the Romney Marsh. sections, which were judged by Air. AV. C. Small, of the Oroua district. The entries were good and ranked, with Southdowns, as the best-represented class of sheep. There were no entries in Lincolns, but Border Leicesters, English Leicesters and Corriedales presented interesting classes with a satisfactory evidence of quality.
