LAYING TOTE ODDS

BROTHERS FINED AFTER ARREST AT TROTS SOLICITOR NOT WANTED Caught at Alexandra Park yesterday laying tote 6dds, William Baker and Lionel Arthur Baker appeared voluntarily at the Police Court this morning and were fined £ 3 each. Accused were charged with laying tote odds on the Dominion Handicap at the Otahuhu Trotting Club’s meeting yesterday. They were arrested by Detective Haider. Mr. Smyth, representing Mr. Sullivan, asked for an adjournment until tomorrow, as Mr. Sullivan was engaged at the Supreme Court. William Baker pleaded guilty and Mr. Smyth said he understood Mr. Sullivan desired the adjournment to be made without the Court taking any plea. Chief-Detective Hammond explained that the two accused were members of a union by which Mr. Sullivan had been instructed. The young men were desirous of pleading guilty as they did not wish to lose another day’s work. They did not want a solicitor. Lionel Baker also pleaded guilty and both accused supported the chiefdetective’s statement that they had no wish to be represented by counsel. According to Mr. Hammond, the brothers had admitted the offence as soon as they were accosted. One had been clerking. Accused were fined. £3 each and ordered to pay witness’s expenses, 10s.
