BARMAN ASSAULTED
HIT ON HEAD WITH BOTTLE SEVERE INJURIES RECEIVED From Our Own Correspondent HAMILTON, Tuesday. A plea of guilty to having assaulted a barman, Thomas Thompson, by hitting him on the head with a bottle, was made by George Garner, 45, in the Police Court today. He was committed for sentence to the Supreme Court. Dr. F. D. Pinfold said he attended Thompson for a dozen cuts on the face and head, three of which had to be stitched. Thompson said he was serving behind the bar when the accused and a companion came in. Accused’s companion was the worse for liquor and he used abusive language. Witness ordered him out and then ejected him. While he was thus engaged he was struck a blow on the hetd and collapsed. C. E. Broad, F. W. Everest and W. Percy said they saw accused strike Thompson on the head from behind. The first impact caused the bottle to break and the second blow was struck with the broken bottle. Accused said he was under the influence of liquor at the time and did not know what he was doing. ACCUSED BEFORE JUDGE FOUR MONTHS’ GAOL From Our Own C orrespondent HAMILTON, Today. George Garner was sentenced today to four months' gaol for assaulting a barman on the head with a water bottle. His Honour Mr. Justice Smith described the assault as a bad one. The prisoner had interfered with the barman in the course of his duty, and he considered the barman, in these circumstances, was entitled to the same protection, as the police.
