Fast Times at Epsom
trotting carnival ends Otahuhu Club’s Success
In excellent weather, and before a jarge attendance, the Otahuhu Trotting Club yesterday brought to a most successful termination one of the most interesting lightharness carnivals ever witnessed at Alexandra Park. It was a real day of thrills for spectators, and the keen racing and stirring finishes earned the highest encomiums for the handicapper, Mr. E. Goosman. The track was in great order, consequently fast times were recorded. In manv instances placed horses considerably reduced their previous best records. Outstanding performances in this respect went down to the credit n f paradigm. Benefice, and Reremai. paradigm won the improvers’ trot in 4 41 3-5 off a 4.52 mark: Benefice registered 3-24 3-5 from a 3.30 limit in the Newmarket Handicap; and Reremai, handicapped at 4.33. tramped 4.26 2-5 to win the Richmond Handicap. The brilliant young pacer Belle Axworthy made no race of the Farewell Handicap, recording the smart time of 2.46 3-5 for ten furlongs off a 2.49 peg. Laplander. keeping a true course in the run home, accounted for the saddle heat in 2.13 4-5, while Akenehi proved the goods” by giving nothing else a chance in the big trot, going a fraction under her 4.40 handicap. The Abbey proved that his form of Saturday was no fluke by scoring -well in the Dominion Handicap, in which he beat a warm favourite in Sunshower, who might have reversed places with her victor had she not been disappointed in making her run in the straight. Machine Gun, who is back to his best form, showed a strong opposition a clean pair of heels in the Coates Handicap, the second leg of the double. Fine Management The management of the carnival was of a high order, reflecting credit on all concerned. The secretary, Mr. R. L*. Absolum, had all arrangements in excellent order. President H. R. Mackenzie was again at his post as host, and performed his task well. Other officials were untiring in their efforts to maintain the excellent reputation of the club, and their efficiency was a powerful factor in obtaining the desired objective. Stipendiary stewards Messrs. R. T. Reid and A. Commons kept a vigilant watch over the sport generally, and at the conclusion of the function were able to record a clean sheet, showing that everything had been conducted on excellent lines. After the Newmarket Handicap, driver G. Robertson was fined £5 for unduly flourishing his whip. The totalisator staff was kept busy. The sum of £36,349 was recorded for the day, against £36,745 for the final day last February. For the meeting the figures were £76,052, showing a decrease of £1.073 on the 1929 turnover of £ 77,125. Leading Reinsmen J. T. Paul had a fine spin of fortune’s wheel yesterday, steering three winners in Benefice, Akenehi, and Reremai. These successes, added to his victory on Saturday with Akenehi, placed him at the head of the reinsmen’s list with four wins. Alan Mc-
Mlllan scored three times—Machine Gun (2) and Te Wahia; while J. S. Shaw, with Carmel and Warspite, was the only other driver to salue the judge on more than one occasion. Details of the racing, and results, are appended. Suburban Handicap The withdrawal of Togo’s Promise left a handy eized field of nine in the opening event. Rangitero £740, was a big favourite, but there was a late rush for Audo* Spray £679. The eventual winner, Paradigm, carried £2lB. Lady Ena broke badly shortly after the start and Lord Haldane failed to strike a gait. The breaking Te Xgutu led past the stands the first time from Rangitero, Don Zoloek, Colonel Thorpe (breaking), Nebraska, Paradigm and Audo Spray. Along the back Te Ngntu had lost her position, Rangitero being in charge here, being the pilot the second time past the post just in front of Paradigm, this pair being a dozen lengths ahead, following them being Nebraska, Don Zoloek and Audd Spray. The favourite put in a couple of breaks and Paradigm held a five lengths advantage over Rangitero at the home turn, with a gap of a dozen lengths to Audo Spray, Don Zoloek and Nebraska. Paradigm went on to win comfortably by a : ength from Rangitero, Audo Spray b«ing seven lengths back, and next to arrive at intervals were Nebraska, Lady Ena, Colonel Thorpe and Don Zoloek. Newmarket Handicap First Flight £1,006 was a solid favourite for the Newmarket Handicap, but there was plenty of support also for Nella Dillon £679, Arachne £662, and Benefice £526. Great Ballin and mixed it at the start, Dad's Hope leading out from Benefice, UrsuIme, Reliance, Hohoro, Childe Audubon and Haerangi Pal. Along the back Reliance broke badly and drifted ri ght back on to the favourite, and completely spoilt what chance she had. was in charge passing the ®fands from Dad’s Hope, Benefice, Haerangi Pal. Hohoro, Glandore, Nella Jetton, Aracfine, Childe Audubon, Great Ballin and First Flight. Down jhe back Benefice was the pilot from |; r suline (who here began to fade out) Haerangi Pai, Dad’s Hope, Nella Dill °n and Glandore. Into the home stretch. Benefice was three lengths c Jcar of Nella Dillon, the latter being JJ® ar of Glandore, Haerangi Pai, Great Ballin. Hohoro and Dad’s Hope. came on to win nicely by a and a-quarter from Nella Dilton. wh' was three lengths in front Glandore. Next were Great Ballin. Hohoro, Dad’s Hope and Haerangi Pai. Sylvia* Park Handicap Hrutus-was withdrawn from the **<ldle race, the Sylvia Park Handicap, backers declared solidly for LapJJnder. £I,OOB. and Te Wahia, £927, 'Y‘Hi mild support for Master Huia, iff 0. Vanity Boy and Uncle Bert *Hcd to strike a gait, and Goldman * as also slow. Dick Dillon going out ,*®t to lead past the stands from Mas--2? r Huia. Laplander, Te Wahia and Tony Victor, but once in the back J'retch Master Huia forged to the *°nt and his attendants in order were Hick Dillon. Laplander. Te Wahia, /Kidman and First Carbine. Laplander made a move approaching the top, and first to strike the home stretch, °*ing clear of Te Wahia, Master Huia,
Dick Dillon. First Carbine and Goldman. Nothing had a chance with the favourite in the last furlong, and he had two and a-half length over Te Wahia at the post. Third was Master Huia, a length and a-half back, and then followed Dick Dillon. First Carbine, Tony Victor and Goldman. Alexandra Handicap All started in the Alexandra Handicap, and a duel for favouritism between Akenehi and Writer saw the former wind up with £1,463 as against the latter’s £1,405. Gold Sovereign’s backers received a good return tor their second, the Gold Bell gelding being entrusted with only £233. Tradesman did not go off too smartly, and it was left for Akenehi and Gold Sovereign to make the pace, the pair being attended past the stands by Mutu, Tradesman, who was six lengths clear of Peter McKinney, with Writer seven lengths further back. When they came round to the stands again there was no material change in the leading division, but P^t er McKinney was breaking, and Writer was making up some of his leeway. Akenehi, Gold Sovereign and Mutu were racing in that order clear of Tradesman and Writer going down the back stretch, and at the turn for home Akenehi gave some anxiety by breaking, soon settling down, however, to pilot Gold Sovereign, Tradesman and Writer into th 9 home stretch. The favourite held her own in the run home to beat the outsider, Gold Sovereign, by
two lengths, Writer finishing on in third place a length and a-half away. Tradesman was fourth, succeeded by Mutu, Peter McKinney and Rose Bingen. Richmond Handicap Explosion £892, Reremai £ SB7, Stony-Warspite bracket £715 and Florent £595 were the chief selections for the Richmond Handicap, in which the favourite failed badly. Concertina led out from Tony Victor and Stony, but when the stand was reached Warspite had run in to second place behind Concertina, with Tony Victor, Mountain Dell and Stony in a bunch just in front of Reremai. T.h© lastnamed ran to the head of affairs as the straight was reached the next time and led past the stand from Warspite (who tangled badly), Stony, Mountain Dell, Evelyn Locanda and Florent. Along the back Reremai held command from Stony, Evelyn Locanda, Florent, Mountain Dell and Tony Victor, and J. T. Paul’s charge turned for home two lengths clear of Stony, Florent and Evelyn Locanda. Reremai was not troubled to win by a length and ahalf in the fast time of 4.26 2-5 (just a fraction outside New Zealand Cup qualification). A great race ensued between Florent and Stony for second place, the former gaining a head decision. Evelyn Locanda was fourth and then followed Tony Victor, Explosion, Warspite and Concertina. Coates Handicap The Coates Handicap was a great betting race, and Sunshower, £990, finished up favourite over Free Advice, £BBO, Machine Gun £704 and Carmel £ 550. Free Advice and Carmel broke at the start and v Gold Dial, Talent and Sunshower were slow to strike a gait. Stanmoor arid Joy Bird went out smartly, to lead past the stand from Sunshower, First Carbine, All Bell, and Talent. Along the back Joy Bird headed Stanmoor, with Sunshower In close attendance and a gap back to First Carbine, Machine Gun, AIJ Bell and Talent. Machine Gun pu* in a great run across the top, which carried him to the lead at the home turn, where Stanmoor, Sunshower, Joy Bird and Talent were in the picture. Machine Gun came away to win easily by two and a-half lengths from the fast-finishing Jewel Pointer, who beat Stanmoor by a neck, with Talent, who was unlucky, half a length away fourth. Then came Gold Dial, Sunshower, All Bell, Joy Bird and Torpedo Huon. Farewell Handicap
With . the last race on the board backers were keen on effecting a recovery and Belle Axworthy, £1,537, was made a sound favourite, with Enawah £960, and Nella Dillon £Bl6 next in demand. The speedy but rather uncertain Warplane was at a. long price with £174. Nella Dillon surprised by refusing to go away and Mountain Dell tangled at the start. Trustworthy rushed to the head of affairs from Lord Nepean and Benefice, while Warplane and Belle Axworthy also began smartly. Trustworthy piloted the field past the stand, with Hohoro, Benefice, Warplane, Belle Axworthy, Laplander and Enawah following in close order. Along the back the favourite put in a run which carried her into second place behind Trustworthy, and Enawah also moved up handy beside Hohoro and Warplane. Trustworthy was not caught as the home turn was negotiated, her nearest attendants being Belle Axworthy, Warplane, Hohoro, Enawah, Benefice and Laplander. A. Julian let the favourite loose in the run home and she won by two lengths from Warplane, who beat Benefice by half a length. Trustworthy was close up fourth and then followed Hal Chimes, Gold Dial, Hohoro, Enawah and Laplander.

THE ABBEY WINS Pays False Price in Big Event SUNSHOWER’S GAMENESS After his splendid finishing effort to get a close second to Machine Gun in the Cup on Saturday, and with the winner withdrawn from the big contest yesterday, it was surprising to find The Abbey at such good odds for the Dominion Handicap. It is possible that many backers are still shy of the Gold Bell gelding’s intentions at the barrier, but when it is remembered that in his Christmas races and again in the Otahuhu Cup he left the mark without any bother, it certainly looked as if trainer W. Clifton lias found the solution to his pacer's starting difficulties. However, lie was only entrusted with £ 481 yesterday, exactly the amount that was invested on Jewel Pointer’s chance. Sunshower was the medium of heavy speculation, carrying £1,621 against Koliara (£956) and Padlock (£949), who were next in demand. The favourite had every chance till negotiating the home turn, where Roy Berry attempted to get through between Talent and Torpedo Huon. He was squeezed out and forced to come round, and the mare made a game attempt to puli her backers through, but failed to reach The Abbey. However, Sunshower cut Talent out of second place and saved a portion of investments from the wreckage. Talent Makes the Pace At the signal Rockburn dwelt long enough to lose his limit advantage, and Talent went out from Torpedo Huon and Sunshower, leading past the first half-mile in 1.7. The order was the same at the end of the first mile, traversed in 2.15, at which stage The Abbey was going comfortably" in be-
hind Sunshower, with Rockburn, Kohara and Jewel Pointer handy, while Padlock was still well in the rear. Talent piloted the field to the 12-fur-long stage in 3.22. where Torpedo Huon. Sunshower, The Abbey, Kohara and Jewel Pointer were chasing him in close formation. H. Frost's charge was still in the van as the final lane was entered, with little between Torpedo Huon and Sunshower, while The Abbey on the outer was putting in good work. W. Clifton’s pacer, finishing strongly, had Talent beaten half a furlong from the judge, but was called upon to stall off a challenge from the favourite, after she got clear. The Abbey was ’tiot to be denied, and scored a half-length victory from Sunshower. with Talent, who hung on well, half a head away third. Torpedo Huon was a length away fourth, with Jewel Pointer on his wheel, and Kohara next. Rockburn and Padlock were a good way back at the end.
