My Own Wins a Rough Cup Race

ROYAL PARADE’S SPRINT KEEN SPORT AT DANNEVIRKE Special to THE SUN DANNEVIRKE, Wednesday. The autumn meeting of the Dannevirke Racing Club was opened today in fine weather and before a good attendance. The track was in splendid order. The totalisator handled £14,981, against £13,939 on the first day at the corresponding meeting last year. As a result of a bumping finish in the Cup race (which was a very rough affair), R. E. Coveney, rider of Balloon, was suspended for two weeks far careless riding, allowing his mount to run over on other horses. The High-weight A field of seven was presented for the High-weight, and Tunbridge was backed down to a short price, with less-er money for Pale Star and Mothplane, and they duly finished in that order, although it was only the riding of A. E. Ellis that enabled the favourite to sco're. Tunbridge was the early leader, but gave way to Kaokaoroa going down the back, while five furlongs from home Whakane headed Tunbridge. Coming into the straight Pale Star joined Tunbridge and Kaokaoroa, with Mothplane, who had been in the rear, coming up on the outside. The favourite appeared to be beaten at the distance, but, hard ridden, he came again and beat Pale Star by a head. Mothplane was I two lengths back and Call Again was next. The Maiden A good field of 15 runners contested the Maiden Plate and He Whanga was installed a firm favourite over Black Acre and Pari, but of -these three Awapuni candidates He Whanga was the only member to figure prominently. Acreline was smartest to begin, but was immediately joined by He Whanga, and the pair led Win Acre, Moatoa and Maidstone across the top and to the straight entrance. At the distance Acreline ran up to He Whanga and in a punishing finish He Whanga hung on to win by a short head, with Moatoa two lengths behind Acreline. There was another gap to Lucretia, with Pari, Agrestic and Win Acre in a bunch. Dannevirke Cup The Hawk was made a good favourite for the Cup from Mountain Heath and The Swell, but there was a surprise in store, for the three placed horses came from the little fancied division. My Own led Air Laddie, Blimp, Marjoram, Chopin, The Swell and The Hawk going along the back, but approaching the turn Marjoram made a run on the rails, the order crossing the top being My Own, Air Laddie, Marjoram, The Swell, Billion and Stanchion, Balloon being handy. There was some jostling inside the distance, The Swell and Chopin suffering. Here Balloon came up on the; outside to challenge My Own, while over the last 30 yards Marjoram came with a great rush to just fail to catch My Own on the post, Balloon weakening into third place, half a length back. . The Swell and Blimp were together, with Mountain Heath and Stanchion next. The Hawk was well enough placed half a mile from home, but dropped out in the straight after meeting with trouble. The Swell was unlucky, while Mountain Heath was required to come from the rear of the field, Tahoraite Hack Belle Star was a good favourite for the Tahoraite Hack, with lesser money for Cloyne and Quinola, and two ol this trio were dividend payers. Quinola jumped away smartly to lead Werata, Cloyne and Belle Star to the turn, where Golden Shadow joined the- leader and was first to straighten out. With the pressure applied, Golden Shadow compounded, leaving Quinola to battle out the finish with Belle Star, who came up fast. The favourite finished full of running to beat Quinola home by half a length, with Werata a length away. Keen was fourth, with Adventus, Cloyne and Skill next. Nursery Handicap Tripping was entrusted with over a third of the pool in the Nurse,ry, Sporting Chance and Souchong being next in demand. From the inside positions Tripping and Henry of Navarre were smartest to begin, with Dick Whittington, Sporting Chance, and Lady Ronald in behind. The two leaders opened up a gap .on the field crossing the top, and there was never any prospect of them being overtaken. Henry of Navarre, however, hung on to the favourite grimly, to restrict his winning margin to a short neck, Manuiri finishing well, to take third place three lengths back, and clear of Lady Ronald, Futurist, Sporting Chance, and Benign. Oringi Hack Royal Opera (£460) was favourite for the Oringi Hack, but there was very even support for five others. Kahu Ariki dwelt on the mark, First Ruler and Crown Link being first out, with St. Melba, Lackham, Royal Opera, and Aarospire well forward. First Ruler gave way, and Lackham and Crown Link showed the way across the top. Emotion and Royal Opera being at their heels. When heads were straightened out, Royal Opera ran to the. front, but had to be stirred up to stall off a fast-finishing effort on 1 the part of St. Melba, there being half a length between them at the post, with Crown Link a length and a-quarter back. Lackham was fourth, with Airforce, Kahu Ariki, and Emotion next. President’s Handicap A full field of eight runners was presented irr the President’s, in which Kaihoro was preferred to Royal Parade. Bonogne and Kaiho.ro jumped to the front on the tapes being released, to pilot Dobbin and Bonogne along the back, but at the half-mile post Cuticle made a forward move to join Kaihoro, with Royal Parade heading off Bonogne, Dobbin, Veronese, and Kaihoro. Royal Parade landed first into the straight, where the favourite ran a shade wide, enabling Bonogne to come through on the rails. At the distance Bonogne promised to be the winner, but Royal Parade refused to give way, and in a close finish got the verdict by a head from Bonogne, with Cuticle three lengths away. Moepai was fourth, with Dobbin and Kaihoro next, the favourite having stopped badly. Makirikiri Hack Cook was made favourite for the Makirikiri Hack from Kilorell. Dis--1 ank, Birkbeck, and YVaterspea.r were first to show out, but 090 k was in charge as they came on to the course proper from the other pair, with Grand National and Myola next. Grand National made a forward move going past the five-furlong post, to attend Cook across the top, with Waterspear and Myola heading the bunch. Once m line for home, Kilorell came through on the rails to join Myola and Waterspear, who were wide out. Cook having retired, and in a good finish Kilorell got up to win by half a length from Myola, who was a head in front of Birkbeck. Waterspear was fourth, with Dis.rank ahead of Cook and Grand National. The following are the results:— 4 High-Weight Handicap, of £100; D miles.—l Tunbridge, 9.8. A. E. Ellis, 1; 2 Pale Star, 9.8, A. BIG FIELDS

PROBLEMS FOR BACKERS AT TE AROHA A PRELIMINARY SURVEY With a high-class field engaged i irt the Herries Memorial Cup. the ! big event on the opening day's card on Saturday at Te Aroha, I there should be nothing wanting to provide a stirring contest. Quality is a strong feature in all eight events to be staged, so that the fixture promises to be one of the successful ever held by the Te Aroha \ Jockey Club. The course is in wonderful order, going by reports from the Te Aroha front, and even if rain unfortunately intervenes the going will not be bad, for. like the Rotorua ground, the track makes a speedy recovery from a deluge. There are a dozen accepted for in the Merries Memorial Cup. and fourteen remain in the sprint, the Waihou Handicap. The principal hack events present a problem. A Popular Sweepstake The Shaftesbury Hack, with its £o sweepstakes for starters, is deservedly popular, for it has attracted the biggest field of the day, 26 being left in. Should these all go to the post the value of the race will be increased, from £2OO to £330, of which the winner receives £27o—a better stake than that for the winner of the sprint. Another rich prize is the Champion Mack Cup, with its field of twenty. The complete review of the programme will be given in tomorrow’s issue. The following are selected as being worthy of support in their engagements on Saturday: Ruakaka Hurdles.—Archeen. Wafco King, Taumai. Star Comet, Glenstar, Waltzer and Terrapeen. Waitoa Handicap. Chromadyne, Nassau Lady, Bold Archer, I’m Alone, Biddy Comet, Te Apurangi and Roval Visitor. Juvenile Handicap.—Brilliant Lady, Bells of Shandon, Chief Joy, Tradesman, Foot Rule, Wild Time and Manawhenua. Herries Memorial Cup.—ln the Shade, Royal Moulton, Maori Boy, Prince Val, Taneriri, Sir Russell and Eager Rose. Shaftesbury Hack Handicap.—British King, Abbess, Volimond, White Ringlet, Moniton, Carl Idem, Sea Song, Valstreet, Snow Prince, Te Apurangi, Chromadyne and Wild Country. . Waihou Handicap.—Leitrim, Valuation, British King, Marble King. Abbess, Lucy Rose and Envoy.

Champion Hack Cup.—King’s Guard, Archie val, Grand Tea, Te Hoia, Thurnus, Nassock, Spring Abbey, Helium and Motere. Hot Springs Handicap.—Le Choucas,' Lucy Rose, Prince of Orange, Lunette and Wenday. The complete list of acceptances for Saturday are as follow: 11.50 RUAKAKA HURDLES Of £200; about li miles.
