INJURED ON STEAMER

WATERSIDER SEEKS COMPENSATION A watersider, William Henry Thomas, whose shoulder was injured through being struck by a heavy sling of timber while he was working in the hold of the steamer Waipu, claimed compensation in the Arbitration Court today. The accident occurred on March 16 last year, the timber sling falling on Thomas when he was endeavouring to place it. The injured man was paid compensation until September 13 last. He claimed that he was still disabled by a nerve injury in the arm and asked for compensation to the date of trial and further relief. Liability for the accident and compensation was admitted by the Northern Steam Ship Coy., Ltd., the defendant, the only point at issue being the amount. Mr. Sullivan appeared for the claimant and Mr. Cocker for the defendant. Medical evidence for the claimant was given by Drs. J. P. Hastings, G. Stewart Moore, and E. H. B. Milsom, whose estimates of disability ranged from 20 per cent, to 50 per cent. For the defence Urs. Kenneth Mackenzie, H. F. Holmden and McGregor Grant estimated the claimant’s disability at 10 to 15 per cent. The court awarded full compensation to date to the claimant and allowed him a further three months at the rate of 50 per cent., and at the rate of 25 per cent, for the remainder of the period of liability.
