THAT PRIMAGE DUTY
BUSINESS MEN DRAW MINISTER REPLY TO CRITICISM Criticism by City business men (reported elsewhere) of the United Government’s increased primage duty succeeded in drawing the Hon. J. B. Donald, Minister of Industries and Commerce, at the annual meeting of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce this afternoon. “I am sorry that the past and in* coming presidents are supposed to be the only members allowed to speak on politics, as material has been given me today for a reply,” observed tbe Minister. “The Government was very averse from increasing the existing primage duty of one per cent, to two per cent., said Air. Donald. “No one will b* better pleased than the present Cabinet when not only the one per cent, increase, but also the original one pe f cent., can be got out of the road,’ be added, amid applause. “It would be done at first opportunity.” The Government realised that something else would have to be substr tuted with more equitable effect.
