OPPOSITION TO DIVORCE
ABOLITION PROPOSED IN CANADA COURT’S “ABNORMAL FUNCTION” OTTAWA, Tuesday. The abolition of the authority of the Senate to decide divorce cases was proposed in the House of Commons by M. Henri Bourassa (Independent, Quebec), who said the granting of divorces was an “abnormal function.” When this was done by judicial officials they could state what alternative could be adopted by means of the courts.
At present the majority of divorces are granted through the Senate, when the large number of Catholic members, who are opposed to divorce, refuse to vote.
