GOVERNOR'S PLUCK
LORD STONEHAVEN’S SWIM IN GALE SEVERAL YACHTS SAVED United P. A. —By Telegraph—Copyright Reed. 11 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. It is revealed that during the height of a gale which raged at Port Phillip on Saturday, a dripping figure clambered up the steps of the St. Kilda Pier. It was the Governor-General of Australia, Lord Stonehaven. He swam ashore from the yacht Corella.to obtain mooring ropes for the yacht and six other vessels, which were in difficulties in the bay.
He secured ropes and ultimately saved several yachts from almost certain disaster. Later at the clubhouse banquet, his Excellency was accorded an ovation. The incident occurred after the storm had lashed yachts that were taking part in the Forster Cup race. Most of the competitors rail with bare masts for shelter, and upon arrival in the bay were unable to moor their vessels. Their shouts for assistance were not heard, and it was then that Lord Stonehaven dived overboard.
