HIGH COMMISSIONER’S CABLE The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated February 22, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London:— Tallow.—No auction was held this week. Business is quiet, and there is no change in prices. Hemp.—The Manila market is dull and easier. J grade, February-April shipment, sold at £3l. The output from January 1 to February 8 was 172,000 bales, against 191,000 for the same period last year. Stocks in England on January 31 were 8,448 bales, against 14,059 bales at the same time last year. The market opened firm, but was easier later, consumers not being willing to follow the advance. Good marks, March-May shipment, No. 1, sold at £35. Fair average quality, February-March shipment, was offered at £34 ss, No. 215 s to 20s less. The New Zealand market continues quiet, sellers not pressing, and buyers holding back. No first hand sales are reported. Wool.—The Bradford market is a shade easier for Merino and fine crossbred tops, but the demand is restricted. Low crossbred is steady. Present quotations for tops are: 62’s, 2s scl to 2s sid a lb; average, 2s 4d to 2s 4£d: 56’s, Is 9d; 50’s, prepared, Is G£d; 40’s, prepared, Is old.
