MISSED A FREE MEAL
JURYMAN WHO WENT HOME IGNORANCE OF CUSTOM From Our Own Correspondent HAMILTON, Monday. A juryman concerned in the trial of H. A. Samuels for bribery missed a lunch at the expense of the State today. He went home for his meal. The jury retired just before lunch time, and as is usual, when the meal hour arrived, the police prepared to escort the jury to lunch, but one man was missing. When the court resumed, Mr. Justice Smith asked the juryman to explain his absence from the luncheon party.
The juryman said he did not know he was supposed to have lunch at the Government’s expense, and had gone home. He had spoken to no one except his wife. The Crown prosecutor said that if a conviction followed it would have to he quashed on account of the incident. Counsel for the defence said he was satisfied it was an accidental happening, and he and his client were quite satisfied with the jury. The judge considered no harm had been done, and ordered the jury to retire again to consider the verdict.
