ENGAGEMENT NOT ENDED, SAYS PRINCESS ILEANA
APPEAL SENT TO FIANCE United P.A.—By Telegraph—Copyright Reed. 11 a.m. LONDON, Monday. Though Count von Hoehberg refuses to comment further on the alleged rupture of his engagement to Princess Ileana of Rumania, it is authoritatively stated that the Princess has just telegraphed to Count von Hochberg urging him to hasten to join her in Cairo and not to take any notice of rumours. Princess Ileana says: “The wedding will take place at Bukarest on April 27. Count von Hochberg’s friends assert that the hostile rumours emanated from certain Rumanian members of Cabinet, who wish Princess Ileana to marry an exalted German prince.
COUNT’S ATTITUDE
“UNTRUE,” HE INSISTS RELIGION IN QUESTION BUKAREST, Monday. Princess Ileana’s engagement continues to be tile subject ol’ contradictory reports. Although it is persistently stated in Bukarest that her engagement has ended, Count von Hoehberg insists that this is not true. The Count, who is at present at Cannes, declares it is simply a question. of religion. The Princess is orthodox and he is a Roman Catholic. The Pope refuses to marry them. The question will soon be settled.
A cablegram from Bukarest on February 20 stated:—“lt is officially admitted that the engagement of Princess Ileana, youngest daughter of the late King Ferdinand of Rumania, to Count Alexander Frederic von Hoehberg, second son of the Duke of Pless, has been broken off. The Prime Minister, Dr. Maniu, says an investigation of the count’s career has shown him in aa unfavourable light.
