CHILD DROWNED AT PLAY
TRAGEDY IN WANGANUI From Our Own Correspondent WANGANUI, Today. Drowned while playing on the riverbank near Pitt Street on Wednesday afternoon, the body of Joan Butler, aged five, was recovered at the Plymouth Street groyne on Sunday evening. Yesterday an inquest concerning her death was opened before Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M. The child’s grandmother, Jessie Johns, who lives in Pitt Street, gave evidence that she saw her last at about 5.30 on Wednesday morning. Later she heard that the child had been drowned. Evidence was given describing the finding of the body, and the coroner adjourned the inquest until today to call further .witnesses.
