NEW REGENT
“MARIANNE” Marion Davies is /now at the New Regent Theatre, her starring vehicle being “Marianne,” an original story for the screen. Incidentally, it is Marion Davies's first all-talking feature “Marianne” is a story about a French peasant girl who tried her hardest to keep Allied soldiers at arms’ length at the end of the war, but finished up by marrying one of them—in spite of the fact that she once had a French soldier sweetheart of her own. It is essentially a comedy picture, the type Marion Davies has endeared herself with to her huge army of admirers, but there is a tremendous added thrill in hearing this popular star talk, especially as the broken English she utters is reminiscent to the very life of the quaint phraseology Australian “Diggers” heard from the French girls, thus emphasising the brilliant talent of Marion Davies. Furthermore, the songs, especially composed for the picture, are sung with infectious merriment and gusto. A brilliant cast surrounds the star, while the settings and the direction add materially to the realism of this postwar story. Everyone who likes splendid acting and a hundred hearty laughs should make sure of seeing it. A full programme of 6liorter talkie items is also being presented.
Georg© Bancroft plays the military dictator of a civilian police force in “The Mighty,” his latest picture for Paramount. Esther Ralston splays opposite the star.
