HAURAKI PLAINS NOTES
Following the abandonment of the proposed queen carnival for the purpose of assisting in the purchase of a seaside park at Waiomo, Thames Coast, on account of opposition to the suggested method, sympathisers who are of the opinion that Hauraki Plains should contribute have decided to seek subscriptions from sympathisers. At a meeting on Saturday evening collectors were appointed for the Hauraki Plains West district, and men undertook to approach people in other districts with a view to getting them to start similar movements in their localities. Record entries have been received for the Hauraki Plains primary schools championship sports, which are to be held at Ngatea next month, and 55 races will be necessary to decide the 20 events. There are 164 competitors from nine schools. Experience in previous years has shown that a rac& can bo run off every five minutes, so it is unlikely that the programme will extend beyond 3 p.m. Residents of Waitakaruru filled the hall at a dance organised to bid farewell to Air. and Airs. C. W. Harris and family, who are shortly to reside in Auckland. Air. and Airs. Harris came to the district 16 years ago. They have always taken an active part in public affairs, not only in Waitakaruru but throughout the county, and few men on Hauraki Plains have a greater record of public service than Air.
