BIG CONTRACT STARTED

DRAINAGE WORK AT ONEHUNGA FOOTPATH FORMATION PLANNED A report from the foreman of works was submitted to the Oneliunga Borough Council last evening announcing that the drainage contract in which an expenditure of £40,000 is involved has been commenced and is proceeding satisfactorily. As the sewage system will traverse several properties not yet sub-divided the council decided that the holders of such properties should be compelled to make due provision for sewer restrictions when their land is being sub-divided. The Main Highways Board forwarded a cheque for £304 16s lid, the pi oportion of the council’s share of petrol-tax for the quarter ended December 31 last. Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P. submitted correspondence from the Minister of Public Works, announcing that if the council would submit satisfactory proposals for footpath formation, work of a capital nature, to be carried out as relief work, the question of granting a subsidy on the usual terms and conditions would receive consideration. The question was referred to the council in committee. After giving the question of sick leave much consideration, finality was reached by deciding to grant two weeks' leave on full pay to all members of the staff who are paid weekly or monthly, but they shall have time lost through sickness counted against their holidays. Half pay is to be allowed for a further four weeks sick leave, when each case will be reviewed by the council The Medical Officer of Health reported that the periodical examination of the borough water supply mid proved satisfactory. A request by the Oneliunga School Committee was granted, that the borough traffic inspector be asked to address the school children on the subject of traffic dangers. Councillor F. w - Mountjoy expressed the opinion that all school children throughout the Dominion should receive similar instruction. Mr. A. G. Beckwith’s tender of £22 was accepted for the construction of an extension drain in Forbes Street. The district fund account is £ 0,183 in credit.
